José Pedro has, in 2022, taken up the role of Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) – University of Lisbon, being deeply invested in research, teaching, mentoring, and consulting. During his career, he has had the privilege and opportunity of reconciling research activities with consultancy work of high complexity and impact. He completed is M.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 2008, at IST, having specialized in Hydraulics and Water Resources. His dissertation, entitled “Using artificial neural networks to model the degradation of water supply systems” marked the start of a fruitful activity with strong emphasis on machine learning, optimization, statistics, and programming. Prior to 2008, José Pedro worked for nearly two years as a part-time engineer in sanitation projects. Following graduation, he broadened his experience in consulting by working for a utility company active in water distribution systems of several municipalities in Portugal and abroad. In 2009, he applied to the IST-EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) joint doctoral program and was granted a scholarship by FCT. His Ph.D. research, undertaken in Portugal and Switzerland, led to the thesis entitled “Hydraulic-hydrologic model for the Zambezi River using satellite data and artificial intelligence techniques”. He was awarded a Doctorate in Civil and Environmental Engineering at EPFL, in 2014. During this period, he worked as a teaching assistant of probability and statistics and contributed to several other courses. Upon completion of the Ph.D., José Pedro was invited to join EPFL as a post-doc. From 2014 to 2017 he took part in three research projects (ADAPT-DB, STREST, and FLEXSTOR), covering topics of operational streamflow forecasting, risk assessment, and analysis of complex hydropower systems. While at EPFL, he also supervised several M.Sc. dissertations. In 2017 he joined Gruner-Stucky Ltd., a Swiss consulting company that is truly one of the world leaders in dam engineering. There, he participated in iconic projects such as the ongoing construction the Rogun dam (to become the highest in the world), the rehabilitation of the Kariba dam (holding the largest artificial reservoir in the world by volume), the Rehabilitation of the Nurek dam (the second highest in the world), or the operational inflow forecasting system for the Cahora Bassa dam. At Gruner-Stucky, he assumed the role of project manager, was appointed leader of the competence center for hydrology, and became deputy head of the hydropower schemes department. In parallel with his intensive consultancy activity at Gruner-Stucky, José Pedro continued participating in research projects (HYPOS and DIRT-X) and was invited by EPFL as an external lecturer, teaching Water Resources Management. At IST, José Pedro pursues his interests in hydrology and dam engineering with emphasis on hydraulics, risk analysis, and decision-making. He actively works in machine learning based operational hydrological forecasting, reservoir management and optimization, climate change impact assessments, and extreme value analyses. He presently supervises several students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) and is member of CERIS. He was awarded the Alberto Abecassis Manzanares Award (IST, 2007), was nominated for the Asea Brown Boveri Ltd. (ABB) award (EPFL, 2014), and received an ex-eaquo honorable mention for the bi-annual Prize of the Portuguese Water Resources Association attributed to outstanding Ph.D. theses (2016).
