Maria Helena Correia Dias

Maria Helena Correia Dias is a researcher focused on the age estimation field through the analysis of DNA methylation levels. She completed the Ph.D. in Anthropology, Forensic Anthropology, on 12 July 2021, with the highest grade, at the University of Coimbra (Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia), the Master in Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences on 9 September 2014 at the University of Coimbra (Faculdade de Medicina), and the graduation in Biology on 9 July 2012 at the University of Coimbra (Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia). Since 2016, Helena is a team member of the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet (CFE, Centro de Ecologia Funcional, Universidade de Coimbra), a team member of the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology (LAF, Laboratório de Antropologia Forense, Universidade de Coimbra), and a team member of the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health (CIAS, Centro de investigação em Antropologia e Saúde, Universidade de Coimbra). Helena as a Doctoral Fellow developed the project (Funded by FCT): DNA methylation as an age predictor in living and deceased individuals. As a researcher, she has published 9 articles in journals with peer reviews and impact factor. She has organized 16 events promoting the fields of Forensic Anthropology and Epigenetics and participated in another 14 events related to Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences. During her academic career, Helena has received 11 awards and/or honors. At this moment, Helena is an assistent forensic medicine technician at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Forensic Sciences, being envolved in forensic specialized activities at the Forensic Genetics and Biology Serviçe. Also, she is envolved in teaching forensic anthropology and epigenetic classes at several Institutes and Universities, reviewed journal articles, and is guest editor of Jove in Collection Methods: Age Estimation Methods in Forensics.
