Sofia Sousa is a biological engineering and a scientific researcher with six years of experience. She holds a MSc in Biological Engineering from Universidade de Lisboa, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST, 2014). Sofia attended a professional internship at Hikma Pharmaceutical(2015). Since 2016 she works as Research Assistant in Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB; IST), where she participated in two projects (NanoMicroImpact and Smartseaweed). She also participated in the project CAROFUEL where she developed her Master thesis (2013), in Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia(LNEG). Sofia published one article in a peer reviewed scientific paper with a high impact factor (Bioresource Technology) and two research papers (as first author) are currently under revision by the project team. Her work were also presented in three oral communications and three posters in different national and international conferences (Namely XX Jornadas de Biologia de Leveduras Professor Nicolau van Uden(Lisboa), BioRemid2019(Porto), CHEMPOR 2018(Aveiro) and IWA Biofilms(Netherlands)). Sofia was a member of the organization of Jornadas de Engenharia Química e/ou Biológica (JEQB(2010) and JEB(2012)) and a monitor at the “Open Laboratories”(2009-2012), from IST. She received the 3rd place on the IST Management Challenge Best of Class (2009). She Volunteered at IST COVID-19 Diagnostics Task (2020). She attended several extracurricular courses (“Safety and Health at Work”, Citeforma; “Water Microbiology” and “Advanced Microbiology for the Food Industry”, CFPSA, Accredited Microbiology Laboratory; English course, Oxford School). Sofia focuses her work on environmentally related projects as she wants to contribute to the creation of a better, fairer and more sustainable world – all her projects aimed for the sustainable use of natural resources and the optimization of green technologies, tackling topics such as the ecologically and economically production of biofuel, the sustainable production of bioactive compounds from different sources, the treatment of textile industrial wastewater and the production of safe and sustainable aquafeed.
