Mariana Farraia is graduated in Biomedical Sciences by the University of Aveiro (2016), and obtained a Master Degree in Biochemistry in the same university, with a thesis entitled "Use of an electronic nose to identify asthma in individuals with respiratory symptoms: from bench to bedside", carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and the University Hospital Center of São João. By the end of 2018, she started her professional activity as a research fellow at the Public Health Institute of the University of Porto by integrating the project "ExPOSE: Establishing protocols to assess occupational exposure to microbiota in clinical settings", funded by FCT. In the next year, she joined the project "ArRiscO - Firefighters' occupational exposure to air pollution, impact on COPD and Asthma", at LEPABE, as a research fellow. In that year, she earned a FCT PhD scholarship and started the Doctoral Program in Public Health, in which she is currently developing activities in the field of allergic diseases and asthma, integrating the Epidemiology of Allergic Conditions Laboratory (ITR, Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health). Since 2019, she has contributed and published over 20 articles (as the 1st author or co-author) in scientific journals, and participated in different international congresses. She won the award for the best oral presentation at the EAACI Congress, in the session dedicated to "Biomarkers in Precision Medicine in Asthma", and the first award from the Portuguese Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC) and Roxall, received during the 42nd SPAIC Meeting, with the work entitled "Cost-effectiveness analysis of grass pollen-specific immunotherapy in children with allergic rhinitis compared to the standard of care symptomatic treatment, in Portugal".
