Gottlieb Basch (GB) graduated in Agricultural Sciences from the University Georg-August de Göttingen (Germany) in 1983. His research career started as a PhD student in a German-Portuguese exchange programme doing the field research at the University of Évora, finishing the PhD back in Göttingen in 1988. For personal reasons GB made Évora his centre of life, also with the perspective to begin a professional career at the University of Évora. Starting as invited assistant in 1990, lecturing the subjects Tropical Agriculture I & II, GB was contracted first as invited (1992) and then as assistant professor in 1994 taking over the lecturing of the subject Land Use Systems. In the years to come GB occupied several positions of responsibility in the administration and management of the University of Évora starting a two-years term as dean of the faculty of Agricultural Sciences in 1997, Pro-Rector for the Experimental Farms and the Veterinary Hospital from 2002 till 2006, General-Secretary of the University Foundation Luis de Molina from 2002 till 2007, again Pro-Rector for the Experimental Farms between 2006 and 2009. Between 2009 and 2019 GB was vice-director of ICAAM (former MED) and since 2010 he has been permanently member of the scientific council of both IIFA (Institute for Research and Advanced Education) and ECT (School for Science and Technology). Within ICAAM and MED, GB coordinated the research group Soil, Water & Climate from 2013 till 2017 and from 2020 till 2022 and since 2020 he leads MED’s thematic research line ‘Irrigated Agriculture’. In 2020 GB submitted the process for habilitation in view of an upcoming vacancy for full professorship for the Crop Science Department which he occupies since September 2022. GB has been deeply engaged in the promotion of Conservation Agriculture, occupying the presidency of the European Conservation Agriculture Federation between 2003 and 2008, and since 2011 until today. Since its foundation in 1999 GB is also board member of the Portuguese Association of Conservation Tillage (APOSOLO).
