Alfonso M. Gañán-Calvo is a professor and chair of Fluid Mechanics in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Fluid Mechanics at the University of Seville, Spain. He is also president of Ingeniatrics Tec. S.L., Spain. He received his master's and PhD degrees from the same university in 1987 and 1989, respectively. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Southern California and a visiting professor at the University of California, San Diego, USA. Dr Gañán-Calvo has published over 175 journal papers and filed more than 150 patent files. Among many other inventions, he invented “Flow Focusing” in 1994 (patented in 1996 and published in 1998 in Phys. Rev. Lett.), and “Flow Blurring” in 2000 (patented in 2005 and published in 2005 in Appl. Phys. Lett.). In his company, they fabricate and own the patents of the most efficient analytic nebulizer in the market for ICP-OS and ICP-MS (OneNeb, commercialized by Agilent Technologies, and MassNeb, see www.ingeniatrics.com) Among other national and international distinctions, he is a recipient of the National Prize of Research “Juan de la Cierva 2010”, awarded by the King of Spain, and has been a fellow of the American Physical Society since 2012.
