Mariana Moura Henrique is a PhD student in Pharmaceutical Sciences Degree in Faculdade De Farmácia, Universidade de Lisboa. Mariana is conducting her research project at Research Institute for Medicines in the context of Liver Diseases. With a background in Biomedical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, for her Master thesis, Mariana joined the Liver Disease Diagnostics and Therapeutics Laboratory at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa), Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa (FFUL). In particular, she integrated an international consortium to study the response of patients with chronic liver diseases to COVID-19 vaccines - HEPCOVIVac. The consortium is coordinated by Dr. Rui Castro and involves 6 European clinical centres and more than 350 patients. Mariana's Thesis showed that severe liver disease patients display impaired humoral and cellular responses to COVID-19 vaccination. She further worked in additional projects running in the same lab, including the study of chronic liver diseases associated with the metabolic syndrome, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Within this framework, Mariana has co-authored 2 papers (1 published; 1 submitted), 2 conference abstracts, 5 conference posters and 3 oral presentations. One of the latter - ''Resposta imunitária celular de longo-termo à vacinação COVID-19 em doentes com doenças hepaticas crónicas'' was presented by Mariana in the opening session of ''Congresso Português de Hepatologia '', in April 2023. In 2023, Mariana received a Research Grant for six months in the scope of a the project that aims to study the stimulation of immune responses, both innate and cellular, to improve CAR-T cell efficacy. Her Research work was conducted in the Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory. In 2024, Mariana was awarded a MOVE Fellowship to develop research for her PhD project at INSERM, Paris. Recognizing the importance of acquiring soft skills, Mariana was heavily present in associative life, as vice chairman of the board of Núcleo de Engenharia Biomédica at IST (NEBM-IST); general coordinator of the VII edition of Semana da Bioengenharia; and vice chairman of the general assembly of Associação dos Estudantes do Instituto Superior Técnico (AEIST), among others.
