Daniela Mesquita is Assistant Researcher (tenured) at the Centre of Biological Engineering from University of Minho (CEB/UM). She is Associate Director at Sustainable Bioprocesses and Bioproducts Laboratory (LBBS). Her research activities have focused on the valorization of wastewater and sludge in a resource recovery perspective, and on bioremediation processes. Daniela Mesquita is an experienced researcher whose main research areas focus on advanced monitoring tools such as quantitative image analysis (QIA), spectroscopy and chemometrics. Her work has greatly advanced the scientific community’s understanding of sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approaches, offering complementary solutions to traditional physicochemical analyses in wastewater treatment. She was Principal Investigator of 1 R&D project @ CEB and was team member of 9. She is the author of 52 publications in peer-reviewed international journals (19 as 1st author, 12 as corresponding author, 8 as last author) with more than 1250 citations and an h-index of 24, 21 oral presentations and 34 poster presentations at national and international conferences, and 6 book chapters. She serves as a regular reviewer for several specialized journals and have acted as an examiner for 3 doctoral theses, 10 master's dissertations, and 4 master's projects. She has been involved since 2012 in teaching activities for Master's Programs in the Department of Biological Engineering (> 10 units) and in supervising students/researchers: 3 PhD students ; 2 Post-Doctoral researcher; 6 Master students; 3 undergraduate students, 6 research fellows, and 2 doctoral students under the IACOBUS program. She has been recognized by the scientific community through several invited oral presentations and maintain close collaboration with knowledge dissemination activities, including workshops and guided laboratory tours for which she is co-responsible. She has also been involved in international conferences (Microbiotec - 2009; Chempor - 2008; and EMPROMER - 2005). She was honored with the "Best Poster of the Week" award (2009) and with the IACOBUS Awards for scientific papers (2019/2020 and 2022/2023) and stays (2022/2023 and 2023/2024) by the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation – Galicia-North Portugal. She is graduated in Biological Engineering (2004) and obtained in 2006 the master’s degree in Biotechnology – Bioprocess Engineering from University of Minho (UM) in collaboration with University Federal of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She concluded in 2011 the PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from UM. She was post-doctoral researcher (2012-2016) at CEB/UM. From 2016-2018 she was Invited Assistant Researcher, from 2018-2023 she was Junior Researcher at CEB/UM and from 2023-2025 she was Assistant Researcher (CEECINST). She was MSc visiting researcher at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2005), PhD visiting researcher at Université de Lorraine, Nancy, França (2008), visiting researcher at University of Santiago de Compostela (2023) and visiting researcher at University of Vigo (2024).
