João Miguel Ferreira Couto Duarte

João Miguel Ferreira Couto Duarte (1966) is a Portuguese Lisbon-born architect practicing since 1990 and an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Arts, Lusíada University [FAA/ULL], in Lisbon, where he has been teaching since 1991. He is a research associate at the Research Centre for Design, Architecture and Territory [CITAD], ULL. João is currently a Design Studio and History of Art teacher for the Integrated Master’s degree course and is also responsible for the seminar Epistemology of Architecture: Architecture and Contemporary Thought I of the ULL Doctoral Programme. João holds a degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture, Technical University of Lisbon (1990), an MSc in Art Theories from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon (2005) and a PhD in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon (2016). He is an academic member of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) and a member of the editorial board of the Athens Journal of Architecture. João is co-responsible for the research projects “Filming Álvaro Siza [FILMs]" and "Mapping the Architectural Inter-Relations between Portugal and Japan in an International Context [JAPOm]", and a team member for the research projects "Architecture and Transdisciplinarity [ArT]", "An Encyclopaedia for Inter and Transdisciplinarity in Architecture: Theory, Practice, Research, Creation [EnA]", "Meta-Baroque: Towards an Architecture of a Future [metA]", and "Cabana de Arte: Architecture and Art in Angola [CAA]". His main area of research is the relationship between architectural representation – drawing, models, collages, photography, film – and architecture, design practice and the history and theory of architecture. He has written numerous articles and presented several papers on the subject at national and international conferences. João co-produced the films Aires Mateus: Matter in Reverse (2017) and Body-Buildings (2021), directed by Henrique Pina.
