Claudia SL Vicente is an Assistant Researcher at Institute of Mediterranean Agricultural and Environmental Sciences - MED from University of Evora (Evora, Portugal), with active collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (Oeiras, Portugal). C Vicente PhD thesis was obtained in 2010 at Universidad Pablo de Olavide (Seville, Spain) with European Doctorate Mention, awarded with honors (Sobresaliente CUM LAUDE) and funded by a FCT Fellowship 2004-2008. Her PhD Thesis concerned the evaluation of biological nitrogen fixation of Biserrula pelecinus L. (forage legume) under stress conditions (water stress and nutrients limitation conditions). During 2009 until 2012, she was afilliated in ICAAM - MED, where she devoted her research into the study of nematode-bacteria association in the complex disease Pine Wilt Disease. Following a 1,5 years in Chubu University (Japan), C Vicente was awarded with high merit postdoctoral fellowship from the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS), continuing her studies in Chubu University until 2016. In 2017, she was awarded with a FCT Postdoctoral fellowship 2016 and, more recently CEEC18 as Assistant Researcher at MED-UE. Currently, her research interests focus on plant-nematode interactions in the Plant Protection MED-group, while maintains her national and international collaboration works in multi-species interactions (bacteria-nematode and bacteria-insects) in natural environments . In the past 10 years, C. Vicente has specialised in molecular biology and different Omics (genomics; metagenomics, and transcriptomics) of microbial communities under the scope of Nematology and Plant Protection. C Vicente is the Principal investigator of 1 National FCT project (PratyOMICS) and 2 Calls ICAAM-UE, and participated as a Researcher in other 8 national and international project(s). She has published 42 peer-reviewed articles (Scopus h-index 18 with 808 citations), 3 book-chapters, 4 magazine articles and participated in national and international meetings accounting for 22 oral and 31 panel communications. She is presently supervising 4 PhD students and 1 Master student, supervised 1 MSc dissertation and 8 LSc/BSc students in UE. She was Guest Editor in two special issues from Frontiers in Plant Science.

  1. Varela, Ana Rita; Jorge M. S. Faria; Vicente, Cláudia S L. "Antibiotic and Biocidal Resistance in Forestry and Agricultural Settings". Life (2023): Resistance can be defined as a change in the sensitivity of a population to a substance that is harmful to it in any way. When the determinants of resistance are heritable, continual exposure to products with biocidal effect exerts a selective pressure that favors the survival of naturally occurring resistant genotypes. As a consequence, resistance can become widespread in the population within a few generations, rendering treatment with such substances ineffective. Since resistance to several types of biocides may rely on the same mechanisms at the molecular level, the presence of decreased susceptibility to a biocide within a population may confer protection against other substances with the same mode of action (co-selection) even if the population has never been exposed to them, exhausting alternative treatments. In agricultural and forestry settings, the mechanism behind the development of resistance is found at several levels, such as: the decreased susceptibility of phytopathogenic microorganisms to antibiotics and biocides; the increased tolerance of invertebrate pests to substances with a previous biocidal effect, such as insecticides or nematicides; plant resistance to herbicides..

  2. Espada, Margarida; Vicente, Cláudia S L; Materatski, Patrick; Varanda, Carla. "Plant Diseases and Sustainable Agriculture". Plants (2023): Plant pathogens (i.e., viruses, bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and insects) can cause huge crop losses with evident economic impacts. At present, we face several challenges such as population growth, climate change, and limited resources. Sustainability strategies worldwide (e.g., the European Green Deal under the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategies and 17 ONU Sustainable Development Goals) emphasize the importance of a resilient agri-food sector and an efficient use of natural resources. To meet these challenges, plant protection represents a key factor in order to develop efficient strategies for disease management. Plant pathogens vary, affecting pathogenicity strategies to overcome plant defenses. For the success of plant protection it is essential to be one step ahead of these pathogens. This is possible by understanding how these infectious agents interact with their hosts, vectors, other pathogens, and the environment. We must also predict how all these drivers will respond to climate change, which can increase disease severity as well as lead to pathogens spreading into new areas..

  4. Jorge M. S. Faria; Ana M. Rodrigues; Vicente, Cláudia S L. "Multi-omics approaches to plant stress: from genotype to phenotype". Plants (2022): High-throughput omics technologies have revolutionized the way science is performed, by generating a large amount of biological data for a broader coverage and better understanding of biological mechanisms. The integration of these omics technologies (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, ionomics, and redoxomics) is currently in the forefront of plant research. As sessile organisms, plants are constantly challenged by environmental stress conditions and resort on adaptative responses to ensure survival and reproductive success. These environmental stress conditions include abiotic and biotic stress factors that often occur simultaneously in field conditions. A multi-omics approach allows understanding the biochemical mechanisms that underly plant resistance and response to adverse environmental conditions, from genotype to phenotype. This includes the integration of multi-omics data into biological networks for the identification of stress responsive traits that can be further applied towards plant breeding, and more productive and climate resilient crop varieties. This special issue is dedicated to omic approaches using state-of-the-art high-throughput equipment to explore plant responses to environmental stress conditions. In an environment that is rapidly changing, particularly in the current climate change scenario, manuscripts dedicated to improving our understanding of plant responses to single or combined environmental stress are welcome..
