José-Pinto-Gouveia, MD, PhD, is member of the R&D Research Unit CINEICC (Centro de Investigação do Núcleo de Estudos e Intervenção Cognitivo-Comportamental [Cognitive and Behavioural Centre for Research and Intervention]. He was the pioneer and leading researcher on Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies and Third-Wave Cognitive-Behavioural Therapies in Portugal, and has been the principal investigator of a wide range of internationally renowned research projects and studies published in peer-reviewed international journals. His research interests have led him to develop extensive research on several vulnerability processes in psychopathology (e.g. Rumination, Self-criticism, Shame, Experiential Avoidance), as well as protective factors associated with mental well-being (e.g. Self-compassion, mindfulness, acceptance) in both psychopathological conditions (e.g. Personality Disorders, Eating Disorders, Anxiety and Mood Disorders), health (e.g. Chronic Pain, Cancer, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Infertility) and normative settings. He has been the Principal Investigator of several funded research projects (eBEfree - An ICT adaptation of BEfree: An app-delivered programme based on mindfulness, values and compassion for binge eating; PTDC/MHC-PCL/4923/2012 - BEfree: Group Intervention Program for Binge Eating; PTDC/PSI-PCL/102165/2008 - GPS - GROWING PRO-SOCIAL, a group rehabilitation program for individuals with anti-social behaviour: outcome studies in forensic samples; POCI/PSI/60954/2004 - Core cognitive structures, symptomatic psychopathology and personality disorders; Pronouns and Degeneration: Differences in Processes and Brain Locations involved in Pronoun Interpretation in Prodromal Alzheimer´s Disease and Healthy Ageing, Bial Foundation, Grant nº 34/2004), and Co-Principal Investigator of the iACT with Pain: an ICT-delivered intervention for self-management of chronic pain R&D project. Also, several PhD and Masters students, as well as Post-Doc researchers developed their work under his scientific supervision. In addition to his research activity, he is also a Full Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Coimbra, in Portugal, in which he is the Professor in charge of the post-graduate course on Clinical Psychology ¿ Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy. He founded the Portuguese Association for Mindfulness of which he is the president. He was a co-founder and president of the Portuguese Association of the Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy and of the Portuguese Language Association for the study of Traumatic Stress (ALPEST).
