Bárbara Carneiro-Pereira earned her BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Minho in 2023 and is currently pursuing an MSc in Health Sciences at the School of Medicine. Her introduction to neuroscience came during her undergraduate final project at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), where she investigated the modulating effects of stress on the nervous system. This experience sparked a deep interest in neurobiology, motivating her to continue advancing in this field. Currently, Bárbara is working on her master’s dissertation titled “Priming Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) as a Therapeutic Strategy for Nervous System Degeneration: Insights from In Vitro Models”, under the supervision of Dr. Belém Sampaio-Marques and Dr. António J. Salgado. The primary goal of this research is to screen selected drugs at varying concentrations and evaluate their effects on the MSC secretome, with the aim of developing an optimal priming protocol for treating central nervous system degeneration using in vitro models of Parkinson’s Disease. This work also seeks to enhance the understanding of MSC secretome mechanisms, offering potential insights into its therapeutic actions.
