Maria do Rosário de Pinho took her PhD at Imperial College, London, UK in 1993, under the supervision of Prof. Richard Vinter. She then got a position as an Auxiliar Professor at University of Porto, Engineering Faculty, Department of Electrotechnical Engineering and Computers. There, and in 2009, she got a position as Associate Professor. After her PhD work on optimaility conditions for nonsmooth optimal control involving Differential Algebraic Equations, in the earlier years of her career she focused on problems with mixed constraints, having published some relevant papers on the subject with international experts, culminating with a semninal paper in 2010 with Francis Clarke. Additionally, she studied state constrained optimal control problems, mainly focusing on the degeneracy phenomenon. In the last decade she got interested in applied optimal control problems, specially those concerning control of the spread of infectious diseases, path planning of underwater autonomous vehicles and agricultural irrigation. An important aspect of her research concerning control of the spread of infectious diseases is the introduction of meaningful mixed and state constraints to the SEIR models with vaccination as a control. At the same time, she developed some important results on numerical methods on optimal control. Recently, she grew interested again in the derivation of optimality conditions for problems with discontinuous differential inclusions, in particular, problems involving sweeping systems. She is also focused on optimal multiprocesses and she has a renewed interest on irregular mixed constrained optimal control problems. These problems are of interest because of their relevance to sweeping systems when coupled with state constraints. Since her PhD, she was participated in various research projects, being the Coordinator of more than 5 projects. She was also the Coordinator of the Portuguese Team of an European Project SADCO from 2011 to 2014. She supervised or co-supervised various MSc Theses and 3 PhD students. She has also supervised of 6 Post-doc students. She has around 40 papers published in international peer reviewed journals and many more conference papers.
