Joana Matias is a writer, researcher, and PhD candidate in History at the Institute of Contemporary History (NOVA University Lisbon / IN2PAST, Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory). Their doctoral project is a cultural history of queer identity and politics in contemporary Portugal, focusing on the gay and lesbian press and its role in shaping community, memory, and political imagination. Their research interests include the history of gender and sexuality, queer material cultures, and the uses of the past. They engage critically with the category of “queer,” exploring its tensions, limits, and meanings in local contexts and languages. Joana is a member of Quir Research Hub (CITCOM/FLUL) at the University of Lisbon and is involved in public history, cultural programming, and community-based archival projects. They are the recipient of a doctoral grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
