Graduated Deck Officer of Merchant Navy in Nautical School in 1974 developed his professional activity as Navigation Officer in the Portuguese merchant ships. In 2003 he graduated in Geophysics from the University of Lisbon, where he also obtained a master’s and a PhD in Physics (Geophysics). He is a Professor in the Department of Physics of Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), which in Portugal is teaching-intensive and cannot grant PhD degrees. He supervised 1 MSc dissertation and several BSc projects. From 2018 to 2020, he integrated the Coordinating Council of the Collaboratory for Geosciences (C4G), where he represented ISEL. He has been, since 2004, an integrated member of Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL). He is in charge of the Paleomagnetic Laboratory of the Instituto Dom Luiz representing it in the EPOS – European Plate Observing System. He is associate member of Sociedade Portuguesa de Física (SPF) and American Geophysical Union (AGU). He focuses his research on measuring and interpreting rock magnetic properties and paleomagnetic research on magmatic rocks, mainly volcanic islands. Studying the magnetic properties of rocks and especially anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility in different structures, like dikes, sills and flows, will help to understand the magmatic flow patterns and contribute to understanding the volcanic structure and his evolution. He has organized and participated in several field works for magnetic sampling in Portugal mainland and volcanic islands such as Azores, Cape Verde and Hawaii archipelagos. He has also participated in several seismic deployments for passive sources in mainland Portugal, Azores, Cape Verde Archipelagos. He regularly presents communications at international and national conferences (EGU, AGU, Castle Meeting). He participated as a Principal investigator in 1 FCT funding project (FREEROCK) and bilateral agreements with France. He regularly participates as a team member in FCT funded projects. Along with her R&D activities, he is also active in educational Physics and Geophysics and outreach activities. He is developing a branch of research in environmental magnetism using city soil and bio-collectors like tree bark and lichens and their relationship with heavy metal contents.
