Teresa Gonçalves (ORCID 0000-0001-9347-0535) is an Associate Professor and Director of the Institute of Microbiology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC), responsible for teaching the unit of Medical Microbiology (Microbiology and Parasitology) for MD students and coordinator of the Area of Infection and Immunity of the Master Course in Biomedical Research of FMUC. She obtained her B.Sc. in Biology, M. Sc. in Cellular Biology, PhD in Cellular Biology and her title of Aggregated in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Coimbra. Her PhD project was developed at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (Portugal). Her first position was as Auxiliary Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and, before that R&D director at a pharmaceutical company. In 2000 she moved to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, as Auxiliary Professor, and began founding a research group in medical mycology. She has supervised 6 PhD students and more than 20 MSc. She is responsible for the Clinical Yeast Culture Collection at UC (CYCCUC). TG is Associate Editor of Frontiers in Fungal Biology. During the first year of Covid19 pandemics, while clinical facilities adapted to the techniques, she become Technical Director for a SARS-CoV2 diagnosis lab. She is Principal Investigator of the Medical Microbiology Research Group (MMRG) at Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), including 5 Junior Level Investigators, 5 PhD students, and among these, 4 MD-PhD students with clinical practice. Her broad scientific interests are related with i) novel strategies of fungi to cope with the immune system, such as modulation of the purinergic system, and with ii) the identification of novel strategies to control microbial populations, biofilms and microbiota/mycobiota; with the pandemics her research group initiated iii) a line of research of studies regarding the collection of indoor air to quantify virus (including SARS-CoV2), bacteria and fungi, and implemented models of validating air disinfection procedures, together with a UC based research center specialized in air ventilation and air quality (DEM/ADAI). These scientific interests are illustrated by the research group list of publications. She keeps several international collaborations including Arturo Casadevall at Univ Johns Hopkins (USA), Jay Slater at FDA (USA), Márcio Rodrigues at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Brazil), Robson Coutinho-Silva at UFRJ (Brazil), Felix Marcos-Tejedor, Univ Castilla La Mancha (Spain), and national collaborations, with Rodrigo Cunha FMUC/CIBB at the University of Coimbra, MC Gameiro da Silva and José Costa at DEM/ADAI at the University of Coimbra, and Agostinho Carvalho, ICVS, at the University of Minho.
