Elisabete R. Silva (ERS) is an Assistant Researcher at the BioSystems & Integrative Sciences Institute (BIOISI), and an invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She completed her PhD in Chemical Engineering in December 2009 and her degree in Chemical Engineering in 2002 (5 years´ programme) at the University of Lisbon/Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). ERS started her research and development (R&D) activity (2003-2005) in national projects (IST) and in the Chemical Industry sector, UNITECA- União Industrial Têxtil e Química S.A. and Navigator (former Portucel-Soporcel) companies. Since 2010, after her PhD, ERS has specialised in functional agents development (e.g., nano-catalysts, bioactive compounds), mainly through surface functionalisation methodologies and immobilisation in materials, with scalability and applicability for the remediation of emerging pollutants. Since 2013 and motivated by the global need for environmentally friendly technologies for biofouling prevention, ERS embraced the design of (multi)functional agents and their immobilisation in polymeric matrices to infer protective properties on industrial surfaces against waterborne biofouling, mainly applied in the marine and water utility management sectors. In her professional career, ERS has been actively involved in competitive international (3) and national (12) R&D projects: as a member of the Coordination in 2 European projects (1 ongoing), Supervisor of 1 Granted HORIZON-MSCA-PF (ongoing), PI/team PI in 6 national projects, and researcher member in 6 national projects mostly with industrial collaboration. Published +50 peer-reviewed articles and books/book chapters (e.g. 45 articles, 8 books/book chapters), 13 patents, from those 11 granted, 7 international - 4 licensed by international industrial companies, and 4 national. Supervised 30 graduate and undergraduate professional and (inter)national students, from those 3 post-Doctoral, 2 Doctoral students, 7 contracted Masters/Licensed Chemists and Chemical Engineers, 5 Master Thesis, and 13 students (1st/2nd cycles) in Chemistry national and international courses. Together with her students and collaborators, participated in several activities of scientific dissemination, having presented about 114 communications in national and international conferences, including 50 oral communications, and received from those 7 distinctions as best panels and 1 distinction for best communication. In her field has been recognised through awards and other distinctions, from which are highlighted: i) the distinction by the Engineering College of Portugal (2004); ii) the Chemical Engineering Honour mentioned at the Young Researchers UTL/Deloitte Contest, Technical University of Lisbon & Deloitte (2010); iii) the Advances in Engineering (AIE) recognition (2013); iv) the award in the frame of Science In2business call (2017); v) and the US State Newspaper media citation for her breaking achievements for the progress in Engineering Technologies (2016). As a recognised scientific reviewer, ERS is a member of the Review Board of Environmental Degradation of Materials (specialty section of Frontiers in Materials, 2023) and Microorganisms (MDPI, 2020), and Guest Editor of Coatings (11 contributions, MDPI, 2018) and Nanomaterials (2 contributions, MDPI, 2021), being a frequent reviewer for other SCI journals (11).
