Tânia Fernandes is Assistant Professor at Faculdade de Psicologia, Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), Portugal, and member of the Research team Memory & Language, of the research group Cognition in Context (CO2) of the Research Center for Psychological Science (CICPSI), Faculdade de Psicologia, ULisboa. T. Fernandes is an enthusiastic Cognitive Psychologist (PhD in 2008 by Universidade de Lisboa, highest mention; PhD grant SFRH/BD/12290/2003) with strong international networking, resulting from 16 years postdoctoral work in 3 countries and 4 R&D units. Since 2014, when she became a member of CO2, after one postdoc at Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium with Régine Kolinsky, a 5-year position as Assistant Researcher at Universidade do Porto with São Luís Castro, and a 6-month visiting period at Kyoto University with Kimihiro Nakamura, T. Fernandes has been mostly focused on investigating the cognitive interplay between visual word recognition (reading and especially orthographic processing) and the evolutionary-older system on which reading is built upon, that is, visual object recognition. T. Fernandes is also interested in reading and visual processes in typical and atypical development, including in adults differing in schooling and literacy, and in studying the causes and consequences of poor reading in developmental dyslexia under a neuropsychological framework. Their research adopts experimental methods from cognitive psychology and neurosciences. She has provided key contributions in Human Cognitive Psychology thanks to deep knowledge of object recognition (DOI:10.1080/23273798.2017.1283424), speech production (DOI:10.1111/desc.12783), visual word recognition (DOI:10.3758/s13414-020-01988-2), and developmental dyslexia (DOI:10.1016/j.jecp.2017.02.003), with expertise in experimental designing and software, and proficiency in advanced statistics. She has thus far published 31 papers in top-tier journals, 4 book chapters, she was editor of 2 e-books by Frontiers in Psychology, had presented their work in more than 50 prestigious conferences (eg, Psychonomic Society, ESCoP, including as keynote speaker) and 21 invited talks at renowned centers (eg, MPI, Nijmegen, Netherlands). She has received 11 awards and prizes, including 1 award at II Word Dyslexia Forum and 2 prizes for most read/cited papers by Elsevier (2018 for 10.1002/dys.1548) and Wiley (2016 for 10.1016/j.tine.2013.01.001). T Fernandes has ample experience in team coordination, including of projects in competitive calls (PI in 6 projects funded by BIAL, FCT, JSPS, with research staff hired; member of 7 other funded projects, 3 international: 2 Belgium, FRS-FNRS; 1 Germany, BMBF, Federal Ministry of Education and Research). She has supervised 3 postdocs researchers, 1 PhD student (ongoing), 18 master theses, 9 internships in Experimental Psychology/Neuropsychology (with Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon), and 14 research assistants (BA, MSc) and Erasmus+ students. She is also member of 2 Master and 2 PhD Programs and of the Mind-Brain College ULisboa. As member of the School Board (since 2020) and of the Ethical committee of FP/UL, T. Fernandes contributes to enhance research integrity and a culture of research and innovation. She was jury in 9 calls for hiring scientific staff, promoting gender equality, diversity, and mobility and serve on scientific committees, including as main jury (2 PhD and 4 MSc defenses). She contributes to high publication standards with editorial roles, including as Associate Editor of Journal of Cultural Cognitive Science (Springer), and previously as Review Editor of Frontiers in Psychology (guest editor of 2 issues in 2014, 2022) and book reviewer for Springer. She is often ad-hoc reviewer for top journals, eg, JEP: Gen, Cognition, Cortex. She also participates in outreach actions (e.g., European Researcher's Night) and knowledge transfer for the public via Media (e.g., podcasts, newspapers).
