Luís Silva is Agronomic Engineer and Research Fellow in the GEEBovMit Project at the Polytechnic University of Portalegre (IPP), who holds a master's degree in Sustainable Agriculture and a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, both from the IPP. He was honoured as the best student of a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy in 2017/2018 by the Escola Superior Agrária de Elvas. He presented his master’s thesis entitled "Telemetry applied to the management of agricultural machinery", under the supervision of Professor Dr Luís Alcino da Conceição (IPP), available at RCAAP. This research was part of the ISOmap Forragem Project ALT20-03-0246-FEDER-000062. He is currently a Ph.D. student in Agroindustrial Technologies at NOVA School of Science and Technology. His research focuses on "Modelling variable rate nitrogen fertilisation in the production of forage crops in a Mediterranean climate" as part of Project PRR-C05-i03-I-000027 - LA3.3 – GEEBovMit (https://www.iniav.pt/projetos/Geebovmit-LA3-3), funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan operational programme. He is actively engaged as a research fellow on the GEEBovMit Project, which follows on from his contributions to previous projects, including InovTechAgro IPP/Project/001/2022 (https://www.inovtechagro.pt/), the ISOmap Forragem project ALT20-03-0246-FEDER-000062 (https://isomapforragem.ipportalegre.pt/), and the MechSmart Forages exploratory project (https://mechsmartforages.ipportalegre.pt/). His involvement in these projects has honed his expertise in precision agriculture, digitalization, mechanization, GIS, remote sensing, virtual and augmented reality, and knowledge transfer and training. Throughout his academic journey, he has authored two review articles and co-authored one scientific article, in top ISI journals according to "Journal Citations ReportsTM". In the last 3 years, he has also authored 3 peer-reviewed international conference papers and co-authored 5, authored 2 peer-reviewed national conference papers and co-authored 4, authored 4 posters (1 at international and 3 national conferences) and co-authored 5 (3 at international and 2 national conferences), and finally, authored 2 theses/dissertations, and co-authored 6 articles published in technical journals. Complementing his academic pursuits, he has gained valuable professional experience through internships at renowned agricultural companies such as Associação de Criadores de Bovinos Mertolengos (ACBM), RAPORAL, S.A., Sociedade Agrícola da Herdade do Pigeiro (SAHP), Jurofrutas, LDA, and Sociedade Agrícola da Herdade de Canhões. These experiences have given him practical skills in team management, operational management, and sustainable agriculture. He also had professional experience as a topography technician, in which he had contact with high-precision measuring and gauging instruments. In these experiences, he developed and refined skills such as the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GNSS-based instruments, drones and photogrammetry, team management, and operational management. His motivation stems from the opportunity to contribute technological solutions to address the challenges faced by the agricultural sector, particularly in the context of sustainable N management. The prospect of taking advantage of emerging remote sensing technologies and digital platforms to revolutionise crop analysis passionates him and encourages him to explore innovative approaches to enhance agricultural sustainability.
