My academic career began with a degree in biochemistry at the University of Aveiro. My degree project focused on several analytical methods: Flame Ionization Detector (FID) Gas Chromatography (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for quantification of monosaccharides and disaccharides to allow the characterization of locust been gum for the microencapsulation of insulin for pulmonary administration. I also worked with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to detect and study insulin release over time, as a preliminary pharmacokinetic study. I decided to take a Master's degree in Biochemistry, this time at the University of Porto. There I discovered and learned about Cardio-oncology and Toxicology, the two main areas of my thesis: ‘The study of the cardiotoxicity of oncological drugs and the study of a possible link between cardiotoxicity and oxidative stress’. During my Master's thesis, I had the opportunity to participate in different conferences. I was presenting author of several oral and poster presentations, being selected twice by the TOX-RUN Scientific Committee for oral presentation, in 2023 and 2024 (the latter presentation will take place at the beginning of May). Furthermore, I was awarded the best poster at the 18th YES Meeting, where I had to defend my scientific work (I chose this award as my representative scientific work). My thesis work, which related to Nrf2, a cellular transcription factor, allowed me to apply for a COST BenBedPhar (Action CA20121) Training School on Nrf2, which, if approved, I will attend in September 2024 in Poland, with full support of my supervisor, a member of that COST action. This year, I am also competing to a scholarship to present my work at EUROTOX 2024 in Denmark, in September this year. (I attached those applications on Annex section). During these last months, while finishing the work to write my first paper as first author, I had the opportunity to collaborate with other groups and colleagues, which allowed to be co-author of already published article, as second author, and two others have been submitted (one on cardiotoxicity of anti-viral drugs and another on oxidative stress on D. mellitus) I also had the opportunity to engage on other tasks, having mentored two girls in 2023 in the Student Exchange Program, which allows pharmaceutical science students from other countries to get in touch with the Portuguese professional reality. At present, I am co-supervisor of Ana Sofia, a biochemistry degree student, who is carrying out her degree project entitled “Characterization of an In Vitro Model of Human Heart Cells”, a challenging but very enriching experience. I would also like to highlight my three years of experience as a tutor, which has not only served as a means of supporting myself but has also provided me with invaluable opportunities to refine my teamwork skills, deal with diverse personalities, enhance my overall social abilities and go deeply into fundamental scientific concepts, all key in science.
