Eliana F. C. Simões has a BSc in Biochemistry and Food Chemistry and an MSc in Analytical Chemistry and Quality Control, both degrees obtained at the University of Aveiro in 2005 and 2009, respectively. Her Master’s thesis was related to “Optical fiber refractometer for frying oils analysis”. She concluded her doctoral program in Chemistry in February 2017 at the University of Porto, and her PhD thesis was on “Nanoparticles for luminescent detection in optical fiber of chemical reactive oxygen and nitrogen species” (PhD fellowship Reference SFRH/BD/81074/2011, from the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT)). The main findings of her research work with CNP, including their application as sensors, have been published under the form of 15 research papers in international peer reviewed scientific journals: 1 in 2010, 2 in 2011, 2 in 2012, 2 in 2013, 1 in 2014, 1 in 2015, 2 in 2016, 1 in 2017, 2 in 2019 and 1 in 2020. I am the first author in 13 of these publications and the majority are published in journals with high impact factor (higher than 4.5) of quartile Q1 of scientific areas Chemistry, Analytical and in percentile higher than 85%, and 5 book chapters. Beside the research work carried out within the framework of her MSc and PhD degrees, she has also developed research work as Scientific Research fellow in the following projects: SenRONS - Development of optical fiber sensors for determination of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) species in biological systems (Reference: PTDC/QUI/71001/2006), in 2011; LUCATP – Luciferases dependents of ATP (Reference: PTDC/QUI/71366/2006), in 2011 and 2012; and Plasmonics nanosensors and excited with two photons based in fluorescents carbon nanomaterials (Reference: PTDC/QEQ-QAN/5955/2014), in 2017. Her research work has been focused on the development of fluorescent sensors applied to the detection and quantification of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Her scientific expertise is on the development of fluorescent carbon-based nanoparticles (CNP) and quantum dots (QDs) sensors for the detection of RONS in complex matrices. She has experience in the synthesis of CNP using different methods and precursors, followed by the spectroscopic (e.g., Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis), excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR)) characterization, size, and shape characterization of CNP and their application as sensors. A special attention in the study of CNP has been given to their biocompatibility and non-toxic characteristics when compared to QDs. More recently, she has been awarded with an Initial Level Researcher (PhD holder) contract, to develop research on the application of advanced analytical techniques for the characterization of complex organic environmental matrices (i.e., atmospheric organic aerosols (OA) and marine dissolved organic matter (DOM)) within the framework of the research project "AMBIEnCE - Impact of atmospheric multi-stressors on coastal marine systems in climate change scenario", PTDC/CTA-AMB/28582/2017), that is under development at the University of Aveiro. In this project, she is applying well-stablished analytical procedures to characterize the composition of organic air particles arriving to coastal surface waters and assess the impact of contrasting OA inputs on the molecular composition and reactivity of DOM in different marine settings and seasons. She has been studying the development and application of fluorescent CNP sensors for 10 years, and she have the skills and know-how to successfully tackle the analytical issues of using and applying CNP sensors in complex matrices.
