Tiago Alves nasceu em Lisboa, Portugal, em 1982. Licenciou-se em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores pelo Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, em 2006, com especialização principal na área científica de Telecomunicações e, secundária, na área científica de Energia. Obteve o grau de doutor em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores em 2011, no IST, com a classificação de Aprovado com Muito Bom com Distinção. A tese de doutoramento tratou de sistemas de sinais rádio de banda ultra-larga sobre fibra óptica.  Foi co-orientador de 15 dissertações de Mestrado pós-Bolonha e de uma tese de Doutoramento. Em 2006, entrou como investigador para o Grupo de Comunicações Ópticas (CO) do pólo de Lisboa do Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) onde é actualmente investigador sénior no âmbito do programa “Investigador FCT” financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. Desde 2018, é também Professor Convidado na Escola de Tecnologias e Arquitectura (ISTA) do ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. Participou numa rede de excelência internacional, em dois projectos europeus e em cinco projectos nacionais de investigação e desenvolvimento na área das telecomunicações por fibra óptica. Participou ainda num projecto de cooperação com o Brasil na área das redes ópticas. Actualmente, está inserido na equipa de investigação de um projecto nacional, onde é coordenador local, e é ainda coordenador de um projecto exploratório no âmbito do programa “Investigador FCT”.  Tem sido revisor regular das seguintes publicações internacionais: IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, IET Optoelectronics, Optics Express, Optical and Quantum Electronics, Optics Letters e Chinese Optics Letters. É autor ou co-autor de mais de 40 artigos em revistas científicas internacionais e de mais de 65 comunicações em conferências internacionais.
