Suman Nandy awarded Ph.D in 2010 from Jadavpur University (India) in the area of materials science and nanotechnology from the Department of Physics. In March 2011, he has joined the CENIMAT-i3N group under FCT Postdoctoral fellowship and after that, he is continuing his research program in this group till now. Currently, he is a research investigator in Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Departamento de Ciência dos Materiais and associated with different scientific and industrial projects in CENIMAT. Suman Nandy has 13+ years of research experience in the field of Materials Science and Nanotechnology. During his research career, he came across a vast tome of scientific knowledge with a good understanding of materials processing, developments, and characterizations. He has in-depth knowledge with hands-on experience in different kinds of laboratory tools including sputtering, lithography, spectrometers, semiconductor analysis, AFM, XRD, HRTEM. He has explicit research experience on oxide-based nanostructured materials. He has published several papers including well-cited review articles on this area. He is also working in localized charge transport dynamics for different nanomaterials and their interfaces through AFM technology for nano-engineering. He started a new dimension in the investigation of localized charge transport dynamics for different nanomaterials and device interface layers in CENIMAT. Recently, he is leading a new work on the mechano-electrical study for application in self-powered devices mostly based on textile and paper-based materials. In the last 2-3 years, he has built a new platform of sustainable and green technology-based mechano-responsive energy harvesting system. In 2019-2020, in his supervision, two scientific works were published in Nano Energy and Advanced Functional Materials. Both works performed on energy harvesting systems based on paper and fiber substrate. He is supervising several master students and Ph.D students under the FCT-NOVA curriculum who are perusing their research project on this area. He is strongly collaborating with Co-LAB Almascience, where his part of the research output is being exploited for commercial applications. In 2020, with his strong initiative, MOU has been established in between FCT-NOVA, NOVA-id, and the Indian Institute of Technology (Guwahati), and a joint scientific program is already started. He has also a strong scientific collaboration with KAUST (Saudi Arabia), Yeungnam University (South Korea), Institute of Physics (India), Aveiro (Portugal). He is also associated with several scientific activities like demonstrating research outputs in public and scientific platforms, teaching activities, and promoting young talents towards sustainable applications. Over the last 5-6 years, he is working mostly in the group to establish a new area of developing polymeric materials for applications in multifunctional smart materials. As a researcher, S. Nandy is inquisitive and always looking for innovative ideas for future research goals. He is always trying to improvise himself to be fitted into different areas of materials research by collaborating in or outside the group. Area of Research Interest: ¿ Development, processing, and functionalization of polymer materials and their composites. Designing polymer and its composites for multifunctional applications like energy harvester, sensors, data storage, supercapacitor. ¿ Developing and designing devices for sustainable green technology, projecting Zero e-Waste Challenge. ¿ Self-powered wearable electronics based on textile and paper substrates. Mechano-responsive energy harvesting system. Recycling of bio-waste-derived carbon particles into energy applications. ¿ Investigation of localized current transport dynamics for different materials and materials interface through AFM applications.¿

2020/11/03 - 2020/11/04 n this demonstration, several prototypes developed at Cenimat (FCT UNL) are presented through various research projects that convert the mechanical energy of movement to electrical energy. The development processes of these devices with planar or linear configurations are also demonstrated, as well as their application when connecting simple electrical devices such as an analog clock and LEDs. We have demonstrated them with hand-on experiments how to generate power from paper and textile only by touch!

2019/07/08 - 2019/07/16 "Ciência Viva no Laboratório -2019" was 5 days scientific program to show the school students about our specific outcomes. We have trained some school students how to functionalize textile fibers and design for human-interactive energy harvester. Students nicely did their job only in 4 days and were able to power up LEDs with their built device. After this achievement they were actually quite interested to study in the area of materials science in future.

2019/04/24 - 2019/04/24 In this EXPO 2019, we have demonstrated our prototype energy harvesting device (textile and paper based) to the university and school students. We have shown how our prototype device generates energy only from human touch interaction. The exhibition goal was to promote sustainable and green technology and zero e-waste challenge. Also, we focus on the necessity of circular economy in future.
