Susana Cardoso holds a BSc in Biology and a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Coimbra. To develop complementary studies for her PhD she spent 6 months at the Yale University School of Medicine, department of Neurobiology and Comparative Medicine, USA. She received two post-docs fellowships (2014 and 2017) from the Portuguese Foundation for the Science and Technology (FCT) and since 2019 she works as a hired doctorate researcher at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra (CNC). Her main research interests have been centered in the field of diabetes and its related glycemic control pathologies (i.e. hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and glucose-fluctuations). In particular, she has been interested in understanding and clarifying the influence of diabetes-related metabolic features on brain health and the mechanisms underlying the increased association of diabetes with brain-related disorders and neurodegenerative disorders, namely Alzheimer´s disease; a special focus has been given to mitochondria, oxidative stress, energy metabolism and mild mitochondrial uncoupling. Presently, her research is focused on investigating the (neuro)protective role of mitochondria-targeted therapeutics in both diabetes and Alzheimer´s disease. During her research path she had to make two interruptions due to maternity leaves, in 2014 and in 2018, but still she has been able to keep up with her research career and have been enrolled in the supervision and tutoring of several students, from lab rotations and investigation chairs to master students, and published several original and review papers and book chapters as first author in international peer-reviewed journals and also co-authored several others. Presently, she has an h-index of 26 and her work has been cited 2,775 times (https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=10539075000) having an accumulated impact factor of 184,269. Her scientific outcomes have been presented in more than 25 scientific meetings with oral and poster presentations. Alongside with her scientific path, Susana has been enrolled in several editorial projects and has served as Guest-Editor of Special Issues for BBA-Molecular Basis of Disease: Post-translational modifications in brain health and disease (2020) and for Biomedicines: Mitochondria and Brain Diseases (2021); Biomedicines: State-of-the-Art Neurobiology and Neurologic Disease in Portugal (2023); Biomedicines: Alzheimer´s Disease - 115 after its Discovery (2023); Biomedicines: Mitochondria and Brain Diseases 2.0 (2023). Presently, she has 1 Special Issue ongoing for Biomedicines: Alzheimer´s Disease - 115 after its Discovery 2.0. She is an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience and member of the Editorial Board of Section "Neurobiology and Neurologic Disease" for Biomedicines and of the Editorial Board of Cellular Neuropathology as Review Editor for Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience. In 2021, Susana Cardoso was recognized as an Expertscape Expert in Alzheimer Disease by the Expertscape Recognition Program. She has integrated the research team of some previously funded research projects as collaborator and as Co-PI and presently she is the responsible investigator of an exploratory grant to study the potentiality of mitochondrial modulators in the context of Alzheimer´s disease.
