Joana Costa Fradinho has a degree in Biological Engineering (Instituto Superior Técnico) and she completed her PhD in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering by Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa in 2013. Since then she has been a researcher at the Biochemical Engineering Group, at UCIBIO (FCT NOVA). Her research has been focused on the development of phototrophic bioprocesses to reduce environmental pollution in the areas of biodegradable plastics production, wastewater treatment, CO2 fixation, biogas upgrading and phosphate recovery. She participated in 5 European Horizon 2020 projects (3 as co-PI) and 3 National projects (1 as co-PI). She is an inventor of 1 Patent (granted in 2019), has 1 Provisional Patent Application, and she published 1 book chapter and 22 papers in internationally peer reviewed top ranking journals (82% in Q1), 12 of which in the last 5 years (9 as corresponding author, 1 as first author). Also, she has 13 papers published in conferences proceedings and she disseminated her scientific work in international conferences with 51 oral and 43 poster presentations (28 orals and 15 posters in 26 conferences in the last 5 years). In parallel to her research activities, in the last 5 years she has been an Invited Assistant Professor at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa for the Biotechnology MSc and Chemical and Biochemical Engineering MSc. She was also an Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal during 2021. Currently she is Vice Chair of the COST Action PurpleGain that focuses on purple bacteria biotechnology for resource recovery and where she has organized Scientific Workshops, Summer Schools and welcomed Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM). She has conducted academic supervision, namely: 2 Post-Doctoral Researcher (ongoing), 6 PhD students (1 completed, 5 ongoing), 10 MSc students (10 completed) and 11 BSc students (11 completed). She has participated in national and international evaluation of financing programs for scientific projects in the area of biodegradable plastics production. Furthermore, she has enrolled in several activities for dissemination and promotion of science. She collaborated with Ciência Viva in the World Biotech Tour by visiting High Schools with workshops on environmental biotechnology and by participating in Open Days for the non-scientific community. Also, she annually participates in her host institution dissemination activities like European Researchers Night, Expo FCT and United Nations International Years celebrations (e.g. International Year of Light). Along the last 5 years she also organized and participated as invited speaker in webinars and in University seminars on themes involving bioplastic production with photosynthetic systems.
