João Restivo completed his PhD in Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in 2014 on the topic fothe development of nano- and macro-structured catalysts for water purification. His research focused on the preparation of carbon nanomaterials supported on ceramic structures and their application in the oxidation and reduction of water contaminants. This work resulted in 11 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, and over 30 communications in national and international conferences, most resulting from the collaborations established as a hired researcher for two EU funded international projects, MONACAT (Grant agreement ID: 226347) and FREECATS (Grant agreement ID: 280658). In 2014 he joined University College London’s Institute for Materials Discovery as a Research Associate under project ICECOAT (Grant agreement ID: 325917), and resulting from his involvement he was later invited to join on a permanent position as Technical Officer. His work in the IMD involved leading the development of functional coatings for applications ranging from biomedical to energy, and resulted in a patent request for a sprayable multifunctional coating for icing prevention with combined icephobic and thermoelectric properties. At the same time, he coordinated the IMD’s internal and external efforts in establishing research collaborations, creating links with the United Kingdom’s academic and industrial landscapes, namely with the NHS Moorfield’s Eye Hospital and the Stanmore Division of Surgery and Interventional Science part of the NHS Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. In 2016 he joined Johnson Matthey’s Clean Air team as a Senior Chemist at the emission control technologies development centre. Here he took the technical leadership and management of the catalyst test and characterization team, and its liaison with the development teams and clients alike. He was involved in several client-facing projects with impacts in the industry at large, as is highlighted by his leading of the development of a test method to be employed at customer’s facilities for porosity of gasoline particulate filters in collaboration with Micromeritics and the Volkswagen group. In 2019 João joined LSRE-LCM as a researcher to continue the group’s activities in the development of advanced materials, catalysts, and processes for environmental applications, with a focus on the interface between nanotechnology and pollution remediation. He has been involved in national and international research projects (InTreat POCI-01-0145-FEDER-031337, NanoCatRed NORTE-01-0247- FEDER-045925, SmartOxidation NORTE-01-0247-FEDER-069836), in the supervision of 4 MSc thesis, tutoring of undergraduate students, and has recently been invited as a lecturer in the Bioengineering MSc course of Environmental Technologies. He has 20 publications in international specialist journals, 2 book chapters, and 1 patent request (h-index = 11 with almost 400 citations).
