Idalina Gonçalves is a Junior Researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, within the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. She obtained her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Minho (2014) and has since established an interdisciplinary research path at the intersection of polymer science, biotechnology, and circular economy. Her research focuses on the development of bioplastics and coatings derived from agrifood by-products, as well as the recycling and reengineering of fossil plastics. She employs both conventional and advanced processing technologies like solvent casting, melt-mixing, extrusion, injection molding, hot-pressing, thermoforming, and 3D printing for thermoplastics. Her approach integrates enzymatic functionalization and green chemistry principles, bridging fundamental research with applied innovation in collaboration with the agrifood and plastic industries. She has coordinated or participated in 22 funded research projects (12 international and 10 national), securing over 5.8 million euros in competitive funding for the University of Aveiro. Her contributions also extend to science communication, patenting, open science, and technology transfer activities, including national patents, service agreements with industry, and institutional dissemination. Idalina Gonçalves has a strong record in mentoring and academic supervision, having supervised 2 postdoctoral researchers, 9 PhD candidates (6 ongoing), 20 MSc theses, and more than 40 BSc graduation projects. She has also mentored research fellows, secondary school students, and international trainees, reflecting her commitment to education, interdisciplinary training, and the advancement of sustainable materials.
