Jennifer Leigh McGarrigle

Jennifer McGarrigle is Associate Professor at IGOT-ULisboa. She is Principal Researcher of the Re-Place project, funded by Horizon Europe, coordinating a dynamic consortium of 7 partners from 6 European Countries with a budget of 2.9M (2023-2027). McGarrigle holds a PhD in Urban Studies from the University of Glasgow (2006), supported by an ESRC competitive grant. While conducting her PhD she completed a postgraduate in Social Science Research Methods and began teaching as a tutor at undergraduate level in the same university. She was awarded a position as Auxiliary Researcher in the ambit of the FCT programme, FCT Ciência 2007, at IGOT-UL. Following this five-year contract, she was successful in receiving a second for five years within the programme Investigador FCT 2012 at IGOT-ULisboa. In 2017, she celebrated a contract with IGOT-UL as Assistant Professor and very recently, in 2024, became Associate Professor. During this time, she had the privilege to serve on several management bodies at ULisboa. Currently, she is on the Commission of Directors, as one of two vice directors, of the Centre for Geographical Studies. She also sits on the Scientific Council of the institute and has recently become co- coordinator of MIGRARE one of the six research groups at CEG. She was co-coordinator of the ERASMUS programme (2018-2020) and sat on the School Council (2018-2021). She has sat on the Editorial Board of Finisterra since 2015. At CEG/IGOT she has worked on 11 international competitively funded research projects (FP5; FP6; FP7, Horizon2020, EEAGrants, Norface) and 7 national competitively funded projects (FCT, FAMI, ACM, OIM, FEINPT) all in migration studies. As well as being PI of Re-Place (HorizonEurope), she coordinated a project funded by FCT (PTDC/CS-GEO/113680/2009). In 2019, she founded the Research Initiative PriMob on privileged mobilities within the international network of excellence IMISCOE of which she has been member since 2005.
