José Alfeu Almeida de Sá Marques holds a degree in civil engineering from the University of Coimbra’s Department of Civil Engineering and a doctorate in applied sciences from the University of Liège in Belgium. The author of numerous papers published in scientific journals at the national and international level, he has written software for the sizing and analysis of water supply systems and wastewater drainage. Marques was a member and president of the organising committees of national and international conferences and has been a member of the Management Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, director of the Department of Civil Engineering, and president of the Scientific Council of the Higher School of Technology and Management at the Guarda Polytechnic Institute, as well as the coordinator of the master’s program in hydraulics, hydraulic resources, and the environment at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Sciences and Technology. He was also the departmental coordinator of the Erasmus/Socrates Program; vice president of the Portuguese Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering; member d´ Honneur da Association des Ingénieurs Sorties de L’Université de Liège; president of the Central Branch of the Portuguese Association of Hydraulic Resources (NRC-APRH); assembly chairman of NRC-APRH; president of the Specialist Commission on Hydro-Energy of the Portuguese Association of Hydraulic Resources (CEHE-APRH); member of the Higher Council for Public Works as a specialist in urban hydraulics, nominated by the Council of Portuguese University Presidents; and a member of the Executive Commission of Specialists on Hydraulics and Hydraulic Resources at the Institute of Engineers. Marques is a member of the Institute of Engineers, serving as a consultant with the title of Specialist in Hydraulics and Hydraulic Resources. His areas of professional and academic interest are hydraulics, hydrodynamics, hydroelectric exploitation, planning, the projection and operation of water supply systems, and the planning, projection, and operation of water drainage systems. Currently, Alfeu is President of the Administration board of Águas de Coimbra, the municipal water utility company.
