I am Cláudia Amorim (PhD in Bioengineering), a PostDoc researcher and former invited Professor who strongly believes that innovation through R&D is the key to foster economic, environmental and social prosperity. I am committed to solve scientific and technological challenges, combining technical and research skills with economic literacy and creative thinking. I have been fascinated about from-waste-to-market ideas, particularly in exploring lignocellulosic residues to create value added products and incorporate them in food products. Currently, my research is focused on prebiotics: production from sustainable sources, health benefits and potential applications. The outputs of my research include 2 book chapters, 13 papers published and 2 under review in Q1 journals: 8 as 1st author, h-index 9, 440 citations Scopus. I established relevant collaborations with Academia: MIT (USA), UA (PT), USC (Spain); Industry: Tetra Pak (Sweden), DSM (Netherlands), The Navigator Company Inc.; and national Institutions for Diabetes (APDP) and Ulcerative colitis (APDI). My work has been drawing the media attention: national TV news, newspapers and radios. I was recently granted a competitive research position at CEB-UM from FCT-Scientific Employment (2021-27); a SantanderBank scholarship: MIT leading digital transformation (2021); the awards: Entrepreneurship&Innovation (Crédito Agrícola Bank) and IACOBUS paper (GNP-AECT, Spain-Portugal), drawing attention from media (Bussiness Journal); and co-organized the BioFHE international workshop. I gathered >1M€ for R&D through research projects, scholarships, awards and scientific contracts. During my PhD, I acquired competences in tech transfer and started to develop a food application containing prebiotics, after being granted with financial support from the NEWFOOD project, in which I worked as PI at UM and USC. I became team member of the FOSYNBIO, LIGNOZYMES and B3iS projects. As Post-Doc, I developed recombinant yeasts to produce prebiotics under the FOSYNBIO scope. As supervisor, I count with 1 BSc/1 MSc/1 PhD students, and as co-supervisor 2 MSc/1 PhD. I became a collaborator member at P-Bio Industry and coordinated a team of Marketing MSc students to develop a go-to-market business plan for a prebiotic application. While still an undergrad student (2012-13), I collaborated in 2 projects at UM: 1) "Valorization of oil-contaminated cork waste" led by the BRIDGE Group in partnership with the world leader in the cork market, Corticeira Amorim Inc. The main goal of that project was to produce added-value products (e.g. bacterial lipids) from hydrocarbon-contaminated cork waste; 2) "Cr(III) sorption onto brewery spent grains: equilibrium and kinetics". Plus, as member of the Biological Eng. students, I co-organized a symposium and supervised a scientific research project for undergrads. I concluded both cycles of studies of the Integrated MSc in Biological Eng. (2009-14) with specialization on Chemical&Food Technol. at UM with the final grade of 18 out of 20, being awarded as honor roll MSc student in Engineering. During my MSc studies, I did a 6-month internship at DSM Biotech. Center (Netherlands) where I worked on dairy fermentations and computer programming. My MSc thesis was entitled "Influence of urea and sodium formate on milk acidification". From 9-12/2014, I was a research assistant on the project "Identification of bacteria using fluorescence spectroscopy" focused on discriminate Acinetobacter spp. linked to hospital-acquired infections. My PhD "Bioprocess for the production of XOS" was developed at UM and MIT, in collaboration with UA. I was a visiting PhD student at MIT where she developed the genetic tasks and was a teaching assistant at the Fermentation Technol. Course with Prof. Wang (2017). I am strongly motivated to solve scientific and technological challenges with her team to create a strong research axis towards industry.
