I am a postdoctoral microbiologist with a Ph.D. in Molecular Biotechnology and bacterial functional genomics (2017 at the University of Minho - UMinho). As a PhD grantee and in my following postdoctoral studies at UMinho (up to 2021), my main research interest was focused on exploring the functionally diverse genetic and metabolic bacterial repertoires as source of novel enzymes and biomolecules, for the development of tailored bio-based and sustainable solutions, bioactive value-added products and novel materials, towards the biotechnological application in the agri-food and biomedical sectors. My research focus evolved towards the biomedical study of antimicrobial compounds, namely redox-active microbial pigments, inspired by their cellular roles in the growth inhibition of other microbial species competing for niche colonization with pigment-producers. This new research interest is driven by the will to translate my scientific studies into clinical applications to combat the burden of infectious diseases. Since October 2021, I have been a postdoc at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes, Lisboa (iMM), within the Biomembranes and Nanomedicine group headed by Nuno C. Santos. I am the Principal Investigator of a CaixaImpulse Health Innovation project (COLOR2COAT; CI23-10134), which aims at developing nano-based antimicrobial strategies to prevent prosthetic joint infections, and am also the iMM¿s coordinator of a project on SARS-CoV-2 genomics in the scope of ISIDORe Translational Access initiative. I was also a microbiologist of the BIOCOLOUR project (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-068924), which exploited microbial pigments for sustainable applications in textiles. I was engaged as team member in several National and International projects: 1) VALEU (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030488), which aimed to explore and tune the genetic repertoire of Pseudomonas sp. M1 strain into Pseudomonas-based biocatalysts, for the valorization of monoterpenes from eucalyptus foliage raw extracts and production of fine-chemicals with great biotechnological potential; 2) the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures GenomePortugal (ROTEIRO/0044/2013); 3) WRANA (Inn-INDIGO/0004/2014), which aimed at the metagenomics-based monitoring of the microbial communities from wastewater treatment plants in India, to tackle the factors that underpin the efficiency of the water treatment and impair wastewater reuse; 4) CETSENTI (RECI/AAG-GLO/0470/2012), involving the analysis of cetaceans microbiomes with metagenomics approaches to monitor the health status of marine ecosystems; 5) Immunomics-Bcc (PTDC/BBB-BIO/1958/2012), aiming the exploitation of immunogenic proteins of the B. cepacia complex to design new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. As a result, I have solid expertise in microbiology, omics approaches (from (meta)genomics to phenomics), bioinformatics, molecular/synthetic biology tools and analytical approaches to characterize microbial cells and metabolism, in biotech, environmental and biomedical contexts.
