Joana Canêdo is currently a PhD candidate in Development Studies at Ithe Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon. She is an activist for the rights of people who use drugs, and member of the Executive Committee of EuroNPUD (European Network of People Who Use Drugs) having been part of several regional and international forums. Expert in drug policy, harm reduction and public policies, she has been researching drug policy since 2014 focusing on decriminalization, legalization as well as on the participation of people who use drugs in the design, implementation and monitoring of innovative programs. In recent years she has worked with women and non-binary people who use drugs and do sex work at the Treatments Action Group, GAT Portugal. Previously part of the coordination team of Metzineres in Barcelona, she is now dedicated to promote peer-led initiatives, such as Manas, a collective by women who use drugs and who are survivors of multiple violence based in Lisbon. Interested in participatory action research, Joana has also been a policy officer at the NGDO Agência Piaget for Development (APDES) between 2016 and 2019. She has a degree in Political Science and International Relations Relations (FCSH-NOVA) and has a master's degree in Economics and Public Policy (ISCTE-IUL).
