I received a degree in Physics from the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1989. I subsequently completed a DEA (Master's degree) in 1993 and a PhD in Physical Oceanography in 1998, both from the University of Western Brittany in Brest, France. Since 1998, I have been a faculty member at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, where I have conducted research and taught in Physical Oceanography and Meteorology for the past 25 year. In 2023 I joined the IIM as a senior researcher. During my 27-year independent career at the University of Aveiro and IIM, I led a work group focused on advancing the understanding of the physical aspects of ocean circulation in the Iberian Atlantic margin, by employing advanced state of the art numerical simulation tools, and observations. A key focus was developing work with colleagues in marine biology and chemistry to enhance our understanding of physical-biological interactions. This encompassed two primary areas: biogeochemical processes in the Iberian margin, including the cycles of primary and secondary productivity, oxygen and carbon, and on the other hand, the processes of dispersion and biological connectivity associated with larvae of different species (bivalves and decapod species of zooplankton) investigated using Lagrangian techniques. The most significant contributions of my scientific career can be summarized as follows: Elucidation of the underlying physical mechanisms driving the generation of the Iberian Poleward Current (IPC) and the Gulf of Cadiz Current, including their interactions with the Strait of Gibraltar. Discovery of retention mechanisms of zooplankton associated with buoyancy plumes and the IPC. Comprehension of diel vertical migration-driven retention mechanisms for decapod larvae in upwelling systems. Develop and validate models for larval connectivity of decapods and bivalves in upwelling systems. Description and characterization of the generation of large-scale filaments exporting large amounts of chlorophyll-a into the open ocean during winter. Investigation of circulation and hydrology in the Atlantic Iberian Margin under future climate change scenarios. Assessment of biogeochemical cycles in the Iberian margin using realistic numerical models. Formulation, validation, and study of sediment transport on the continental shelf using realistic state-of-the-art numerical models. This research developed also contributed to the training of students, through the inclusion of topics and teaching methods that arise directly from the research topics. I produced 55 scientific articles in indexed international review which received >2100 citations (scopus), with an average of 36 citations per article, resulting in an h-index of 22. I was supervisor or co-supervisor of 6 post-doctoral researchers, 8 PhD students (plus 2 ongoing), 9 MSc students. The most relevant curricular units I coordinates are Remote Sensing and Dynamic Oceanography (1st Cycle), Large Scale Oceanographic Processes (2nd Cycle), Modelling and Observing systems (3rd Cycle). Other relevant subjects that he coordinated or taught in the past were Physical Oceanography, Geophysical Data Analysis (1st Cycle), or Coastal Physical Oceanography and Advanced Dynamic Oceanography (2nd Cycle). I was coordinator of 3 national projects, institutional coordinator of 6 national projects, and 3 international projects, team coordinator of 5 national projects, and team member in 11 international, national or cooperation projects. I was member of the coordinating committee of 2 PhD programs in the area of marine sciences offered by the University of Aveiro: -Do*Mar, Science, Technology and Sea Management-, in collaboration with universities in northern Portugal and Galicia, and, -Environmental and Sea Sciences-, in collaboration with the Universities of Porto and Algarve.
