Patrícia Bacalhau has a background in supramolecular chemistry and biochemical mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, holds a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Algarve (Portugal), an MSc degree in Chemistry Teaching and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Évora. Her training in molecular synthesis started in 1999 as a student at ITQB, where Patrícia developed lanthanide coordinated crown azamacrocycles (radiolabelled with 153Sm) for therapeutic use in bone cancer (Portugal). During her Ph.D research, Patrícia engaged the study of the biochemical mechanisms involved in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Her main results involved the discovery of a lead compound with therapeutic benefits for AD. Her Ph.D. was successfully completed in 4 years. During this time, Patrícia published several peer reviewed papers, a patent and her investigation also produced numerous presentations in international congresses. Since 2022, she has been working as a research manager in the LABscape group at the University of Évora, where Patrícia gained extensive experience in proposal preparation, budgeting and scientific and financial reporting, as well as in coordinating large, multidisciplinary teams. Patrícia organised two major international congresses with more than 300 participants and is currently co organising a third congress expected to receive around 400 participants. In parallel, Patrícia has been teaching Human and General Biochemistry to undergraduate students and supervising several undergraduate projects in biochemistry and biotechnology laboratories.
