António Jorge R. F. Guiomar is an Auxiliary Researcher with teaching duties at the Dept. of Life Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal, and a researcher at CERES - Chemical Engineering and Renewable Resources for Sustainability (formerly CIEPQPF - Chemical Processes and Forest Products Engineering Research Centre). His research career started in 1989 as a Junior Researcher at the Dept. of Chemistry (UC). In 1991, moved to the Dept. of Biochemistry (UC), becoming a Research Assistant. In 1998, became an Auxiliary Researcher at this dept. and, in 2009, became an Auxiliary Researcher at the Dept. of Life Sciences (UC). He holds a BSc degree in Biochemistry (UC, 1987; dissertation title: Immobilization of alpha-Chymotrypsin and Cellulase onto Polymeric Supports), an MSc degree in enzyme-based amperometric biosensors (University of Leeds, UK, 1989; dissertation title: Immobilized Cholesterol Oxidase in Amperometric Biosensors), and a PhD degree on the application of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films to the study of immobilized enzymes (University of Leeds, UK, 1997; dissertation title: The Influence of the Micro-Environment on the Structure and Activity of Immobilised Glucose Oxidase). His main research interests lie in the area of biomaterials, in particular, controlled drug release systems, bio/hemocompatibility of materials, attachment of biomolecules to surfaces, modification and characterization of polymers, and surface modification and characterization. As a researcher or supervisor of research, participated in 12 financed research projects (including 2 international projects), having coordinated the research activities of UC teams in 5 of them (incl. 1 international project). He was the co-supervisor of 1 PhD thesis and of 12 MSc thesis and the supervisor of 4 MSc thesis, 14 final year research projects, 11 internships and 1 research initiation grant. He has co-authored 28 research papers, 2 book chapters and 1 encyclopedia entry in the areas of enzyme immobilization, enzyme-based biosensors, use of SAMs of alkanethiols on gold and LB films as model surfaces for studies with immobilized enzymes, synthesis and hemocompatibility of polyurethanes, electrospun nanofiber mats for biocatalysis, biofunctionalization of inorganic nanoparticles/nanowires for cell labelling and sorting, controlled drug release for ophthalmological applications and wound dressings, and metabolic studies of Cr(VI)-induced cancer. He was also a member of the juries of 6 PhD and 9 MSc vivas, and a member of 3 juries for the monitoring of PhD theses and 1 jury for the equivalence of a PhD degree obtained abroad. He belonged to the organizing or scientific committees of 5 conferences. Currently, he lectures Biocompatibility of Biomaterials to the MSc in Biochemistry (UC). In the past, he has lectured course units on biomaterials, enzymology, laboratorial biochemistry and polymer chemistry to the MSc degrees in Biochemistry and in Biochemical Engineering, and to the BSc degrees in Biochemistry and in Chemistry, all at UC. He has reviewed submitted manuscripts for 17 periodicals and received the 2021 Acta Biomaterialia Reviewer Award for Excellence in Reviewing (Elsevier). He was the Erasmus coordinator of the Biochemistry area at UC between 2005 and 2020.
