Carolina Furtado (PhD 2020, University of Porto, Portugal) is an Assistant Professor at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto. Carolina Furtado has published 25 papers in international peer-reviewed journals having a Scopus h-index of 16. She is the recipient of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) award for the best PhD thesis (2020), and she is an Amelia Earhart Fellow (2018) and a Fulbright Grantee (2016). Carolina Furtado participated and helped coordinate research projects funded by Airbus, Embraer, FCT, US Air Force, US Navy and NASA. During her doctoral program, she developed numerical models for the simulation of elastic and inelastic failure of composite materials, analytical models for the generation of design allowables for composite materials, and studied the mechanical performance of advanced, non-conventional composite materials. As a Postdoctoral Associate at the Department of AeroAstro at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, she helped coordinate several research projects funded by the US Navy and NASA, mainly focused on the development of composite-based multifunctional materials.
