Vitória Baptista (VB) earned her BSc in Biochemistry (2016) and MSc in Applied Biochemistry – Biomedicine research field (2018) both from the University of Minho. Her passion for malaria research began as a research fellow and deepened during her PhD in Biomedical Engineering (02/2020-09/2024), funded by an FCT scholarship. Her PhD focused on leveraging the biophysical properties of malaria hemozoin for diagnostic applications and exploiting its biological pathway to inform new therapies. Her career thus far provided her with expertise in topics of microbiology, molecular biology, genetic manipulation, protein interaction, drug resistance, and optical sensors. VB is an enthusiastic researcher who thrives to study new research topics, is excellent at multitasking, has outstanding communication skills and can synergistically work in a team. Her scientific and technical excellence are supported by training, publications, and communication records. In fact, VB supervised and mentored students, published 9 journal articles, 3 conference papers, 1 US/EPO patent and participated in several national and international meetings. During her scientific path, VB performed two research trainings: first in Liliana Mâncio’s Lab at Institut Pasteur (France) supported by Erasmus+ and secondly in Dr. Ángel Vizoso Vázquez’ Lab at University of Coruña (Spain) with an EMBO Scientific Exchange Grant and a FEMS Research and Training Grant. Additionally, she has contributed to multiple research projects, including both past and ongoing grants funded by FCT, ESCMID and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology from the Dominican Republic. She was selected to be a mentee in the International Mentoring Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education Mentee 2021-2022. VB participated in several outreach activities, and she is the founder and coordinator of the Junior Section of the Portuguese Biochemical Society and its representative in the Junior Section of FEBS. Currently, VB is a Research Associate at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology at the University of Glasgow.
