Mafalda Casais

Mafalda Casais was born in Lisbon on the 25th of November 1984. She did a three-year illustration course (Ar.Co Lisboa), followed by an undergraduate degree in Design from the Lisbon School of Architecture (Universidade de Lisboa). During the undergraduate degree, Mafalda spent one year in Italy, at the University of Genoa (Universitá degli Studi di Genova), within the European exchange programme Erasmus. She then was awarded a Master degree in Product Design, by the Lisbon School of Architecture. In her Master thesis, she investigated the green kitchen as a central part of an emerging type of green consumer, resulting in a conference publication. This work laid the foundation for what it meant to conduct user research and to design things that are relevant for longer, a seed of meaningful relations between products and people, which then inspired the PhD project. In 2012, Mafalda received a doctoral grant awarded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), to conduct a PhD project. This project was developed at the Delft Institute of Positive Design, at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (TU Delft Delft University of Technology), in the Netherlands, and was entitled Design with symbolic meaning: Introducing well-being related symbolic meaning in design. The research focused on well-being related symbolic meaning in products. The main dissemination activities involved in the project were six publications, including a journal paper, several conference papers, a poster presentation, a card set, and a videography presented at an academic film festival. The PhD was concluded in 2020. Throughout her stay in the Netherlands, Mafalda was also involved in teaching (Bachelor, Master and PhD level) and supervised two Master thesis in Design (both at the TU Delft). In the last two years of the PhD (2018), she moved to Portugal and has since developed an independent research project at CIAUD (Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design), at the Lisbon School of Architecture. Since 2019, she teaches Applied Positive Psychology at ISCSP Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (Universidade de Lisboa).
