Irène DOS SANTOS (female, 1975) holds a PhD in Social Anthropology at the EHESS (Paris, 2010) and is a senior research fellow at the French National Centre for Scientific Research-CNRS, working at the Migrations and Society Research Unit-URMIS (University of Paris; http://www.urmis.fr/irene-dos-santos/). She is a fellow of the Institute of Migrations in the “Global” department (IC Migrations, Campus Condorcet) and associated researcher at the Center for Research in Anthropology -CRIA (New University of Lisbon) where she conducted a postdoctoral research funded by the FCT (the Portuguese national funding for science, research and technology). Based on fieldwork conducted in Western Europe (France, Portugal) and former Portuguese colonies in Africa (Angola) and South America (Brazil), her research interests lie at the intersection of a socio-anthropology of migration and memory which pays attention to the social, cultural, territorial and historical (dis)continuities in (post)colonial and (post)imperial societies. She is working on two main projects based on ethnography and qualitative sociology. The first one questions the tensions between transmission and the social and cultural emancipation of individuals, by analysing the appropriation by ‘second’ and ‘third generations’ of migrants and repatriates of a belonging to places (local and national level), as well as a social capital of mobility. She works in particular on the descendants of Portuguese migrants in France and on young Portuguese graduates who left to work in Angola in the years 2000-2010, by looking at the transnational social, economic and political links they build across the ages of life and according to the economic and political contexts of these countries (and within a ‘lusophone’ space). The second one deals with the social concept of memory, focuses on how individuals and groups are taking up this concept in political demands and recognition of the societies in which they live. Her work includes the relationship to the colonial and imperial past in Portugal, with an emphasis on the articulation, or overlay, between biographical, historical and historiographical ruptures in this postcolonial and postimperial European society. A reflection which constitutes the research axis of the Group “Migration in Lusophone Worlds: Identities, Otherness and Circulations” she leads (with Sónia Ferreira, PhD, CRIA, Portugal) at the URMIS. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters published in French, Portuguese and English, she co-edited four journal issues and collectif books, and is co-author of two documentary films. Since 2018, she has been a member of the journal's editorial board of Lusotopie (Brill editor), a comparatist international journal devoted to the analysis of politics in the broad sense within the contemporary spaces stemming from Portuguese history and colonization. One of the objectives of this editorial project is to bring forward different ways of interrogation Portugal’s colonial legacies, through the creation of a space for reflection, within which knowledge, and the relationship between researchers, would be decolonised, a collaborative space that would be as symmetrical as possible and far away from epistemological hegemonies. Since 2010, she co-organize a research seminar “Memory and Patrimonialization of migrations” at the EHESS (Paris), which, since 2020, has been part of the Master ‘Migrations’ of the Institute of Migrations (Campus Condorcet). She also teaches in the Master social sciences ‘Migrations, Racisme, Otherness’ at the University of Paris. Since the mid-2000s, she participated in numerous collective research projects on migration, exile and memory, at local (EMERGENCES/Mayor of Paris), national (ANR ; CNRS), European (Europe for citizens) and international (Partner University Fund/Université de Nanterre-University of Chicago ; AHRC-LABEX Pasp/ UK-France) level.
