Sandra Aguiar graduated in Applied Chemistry - Biotechnology in 2003 at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa during which she enrolled a research project at the University of Nottingham as an Erasmus student. She then completed a Master’s in Clinical Microbiology and a PhD in Microbiology at the iMM/FM-ULisboa. Following her PhD, she secured a FCT postdoc fellowship in 2011 to continue the research on S. pneumoniae biology and impact of vaccines. During this period, she was involved in teaching Microbiology classes at the Faculty of Medicine as an invited assistant Professor (2005-2015). In 2015, she was awarded a new FCT post-doctoral grant at the antibody Engineering Lab supervised by Professor Frederico Aires da Silva (CIISA-FMV) to develop new therapeutic strategies. By combining the groups research in antibody-based therapies with her background in bacterial infections she started a new research line in targeted therapies for bacterial infections which has enrolled two master and one PhD student and the first study publications, in which she is the corresponding author, have recently been submitted (Ferreira et Al, Pharmaceutics, 2021). To promote international and national collaborations and research interdisciplinarity, she integrated the brain infections ESCMID study group and have established a collaboration with the ExtremoChem biotech company. She also continuously attended national and international courses, such as the “Host-pathogen interaction course” at the Institute Pasteur in France and the EMBL-training “Proteomics Bioinformatics” in Cambridge, UK. Together with scientific research, it is one of her core intentions to maximize the value of publicly funded research to benefit society. To achieve the translation and commercialization of scientific discoveries, she pursued two entrepreneurship courses (StartHealth-UL and CoHitec) in which was attributed a second prize for best start-up project by the ULisboa and attended a Management postgraduation course by Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics. With 16 years of experience, she has published 29 scientific publications with 438 citations and an h-index of 11, of which 1 patent, 2 book chapters and 12 journal articles (all Q1) in the last 5 effective years. Furthermore, since 2015 she has contributed to the funding of 8 research projects, FCT (N=3), Gilead Génese (N=2) and CIISA-FVM (N=3), being principal investigator in the later.
