Nina has a PhD in History - History of the Portuguese Discoveries and Expansion, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of NOVA University of Lisbon (2015/2020) under the theme "The taxonomy of Portuguese whaling between the 15th and the 18th century: An Atlantic history of the sea, whales and people" funded by FCT, Portugal. She has a background in natural sciences, namely a Bachelor degree in Biology from the University of Évora with a undergraduate project themed "Cetaceans of the Portuguese mainland coast: whaling data and study of the occurrence of coastal species" (2003/2008), and a Master degree in Marine Ecology with a dissertation titled "Cetaceans Occurrence and Behavioral Patterns off the West Portuguese Coast" (2008/2010). She is a researcher and sub-director at CHAM, NOVA FCSH and auxiliary researcher at the ERC Synergy Grant "4-Oceans: Human History of Marine Life". She is the PI of the exploratory project funded by CHAM "ANIMALIA - ANIMAL BIOGRAPHIES: A network of agencies in the making of early modern empires". She is currently a board member and the Regional Representative of Portugal at ESEH-European Society for Environmental History. She has been involved in national and international projects on marine environmental history and blue humanities and she is a team member of the UNESCO Chair The Ocean's Cultural Heritage. Her primary research interest is the entangled history of humans and marine animals, their exploitation, their economic interest and the cultural and environmental impact of that relationship over time.
