Hugo Guímaro is a PhD student in Biosciences at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS - United Kingdom) and the Marine and Environmental Science Centre of the University of Coimbra (MARE-UC). His research focuses on Antarctic marine animal ecology, spanning a multidisciplinary approach to study marine animals and the impact of climate change on apex predators in the Southern Ocean. Currently, he is studying emperor penguins from space using satellite imagery to learn more about their populations and diet through the color of their guano. He also combines tracking analysis to determine where emperor penguins are foraging and DNA analysis of their guano to identify their diet composition. Besides his scientific work, he is highly involved in education and outreach activities related to polar science, raising awareness for polar regions issues.
