I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science and Networks from École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Paris (France), currently known as Télécom ParisTech, and Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (Portugal), in 2001. I am an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of Universidade de Aveiro and a researcher at IEETA, a non-profit R&D institute affiliated with the same university. I also served as a guest professor of the Information and Communications Technologies Institute of Carnegie Mellon University (USA) in 2007-2010, under a protocol with the Portuguese state, and OTH Regensburg (Germany) in 2016. In 2006-2008 I participated in a joint program of the University of Aveiro and Cape Verde University for two editions of a master's degree in information systems in that country. I have been program director of the B.Sc. in Technology and Information Systems and of the M.Sc. in Information Systems of the University of Aveiro. I participated in the proposal of several university study plans, bachelor's and master's degrees in computer engineering and information systems, and in creating and preparing new curricular units. I have been highly committed with science and technology communication and organized more than 10 one-week programs for young students (<18 years old) between 2014 and 2018, among other programs and events. My main teaching and research topics are on data and knowledge engineering. I have investigated in databases since my PhD. Since then, my main topics of interest have been spatial and spatiotemporal databases. With the evolution of my research work and participation in projects, and naturally, the scientific and technological evolution, my research evolved into related topics, first in distributed databases, big data and data analytics, and more recently in data quality and provenance, and time series forecasting applications. I was the principal investigator (PI) of MoST (PTDC/CCI-INF/32636/2017) and EES DataLab (MIT-EXPL/ACC/0057/2021), and participated in Urbis (PTDC/EIA/73531/2006) as Local-PI, three projects funded by The Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) on spatiotemporal databases. I was Local-PI of RH4.0 FeD (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-039719), a project on time series forecasting, and participated in the projects Produtech SIF (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-024541) and Augmanity (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-046103), with a contribution on big data, distributed databases and data analytics, and in the project Odyssey (ALG-01-0247-FEDER-070150), with a contribution on spatial data and geographic information systems. Currently, I am participating in the Nexus Agenda consortium, working on data quality and provenance. I am a member of the Program Committee of the IEEE Intl. Conf. on eScience since 2014. In MoST we were awarded ‘Best runner-up demo paper’ of the ACM SIGSpatial in 2019 and Tiago Ribeiro, a student and grant holder of EES DataLab, received the 'Best Poster Award' in the Climate Science & Climate Change category at MIT Portugal 2023 Annual Conference.
