Pedro Miguel Borges do Canto Mota Machado, obtained his Astronomy and Astrophysics PhD degree at the Paris Observatory and the University of Lisbon, in association regime. He is Principal Investigator (PI) of the project: Planets - Towards Understanding their General circulation Atmospheres, PTDC/FIS-AST/29942/2017 at the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences. He published more than 20 scientific articles on specialized journals. He supervised several PhD thesis (3 finished and 4 ongoing), master thesis (8 finished and 5 ongoing), he also supervised several research grants and Mentored/Tutored many short projects/internships. He was awarded with four distinction/prizes. His activity is focused on planetary sciences, namely the study of solar system planetary atmospheres. Currently, he continues his research on atmospheric dynamics using Doppler velocimetry techniques, cloud tracking methods, atmospheric wave detection/ characterization, and atmospheres' chemical retrieval (NEMESIS). He developed and optimized tools to retrieve winds at cloud top region using Doppler velocimetry and high-resolution spectra. These techniques enabled the first ground-based direct measurement of the latitudinal profile of zonal wind in the atmosphere of Venus, the simultaneous determination of the zonal wind across a wide range of latitudes and local times (VLT/UVES). These were the first direct instantaneous measurements of latitudinal wind profiles in the visible. Fibre-based high-resolution spectra (CFHT/ESPaDOnS, HARPS-N/TNG and VLT/ESPRESSO) allowed the comparison with simultaneous space-based cloud tracking measurements using VEx/VIRTIS and AKATSUKI produced two kinds of relevant results: (1) characterization of the latitudinal zonal wind profile and its variability, (2) retrieval of instantaneous winds and detection of the presence and evolution of wavelike phenomena. It has been possible to obtain the first unambiguous detection of a poleward meridional wind flow. The referred results demonstrated the near instantaneous capability of the Doppler velocimetry techniques to better constrain planetary atmosphere's dynamics. He observed Venus' night-side cloud features, in the near infrared, and also used images taken from MESSENGER and BepiColombo flyby to Venus, to retrieve cloud-tracked winds. He is an invited lecturer at Lisbon University (after 2014). He dedicated himself in past decade to foster and consolidate the planetary atmosphere's research, taking advantage of an international network that includes recognised international reference researchers on these topics. Present main topics include: direct collaboration with AKATSUKI space mission, atmospheric wave characterization (VEx, MEx), Gas Giants atmosphere's study with VLT/ESPRESSO and UVES, and CASSINI. Recently they adapted the Doppler velocimetry technique to Jupiter and Saturn using VLT observations. He is Co-I of ESA's ARIEL space mission, PI of ARIEL Portuguese consortium and leader of ARIEL WG on synergies between Solar System and Exoplanetary atmospheres. He is invited scientist on Akatsuki space mission (JAXA). He was in the coordination of the BepiColombo flybys to Venus (2020 and 2021) observational campaign. He is Mars Express OMEGA instrument's team member and he is part of ESA's project: Mars Wind & Wave Mapping (ongoing). Recently, he became Co-I of EnVision space mission's spectrometer VenSpec-H. He is PI of ESA's PRODEX project under the framework of Portuguese participation on ARIEL space mission.
