Rui Moreira completed his Master degree at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, and obtained his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Lisbon. After a postdoctoral stay in the UK, Rui started his career as an independent scientist in Lisbon in 1993 and was promoted to Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in 2006, becoming Head of Department in 2010-2016, and Director of the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa) in 2010-2013. Rui's research interests are in the fields of medicinal chemistry and chemical biology, covering the development of anti-infectious agents, particularly for malaria treatment, the development of prodrug chemistry for targeted drug delivery, and the design of covalent inhibitors, and chemical probes for activity- and photoaffinity-based protein profiling. Some of his research highlights include the discovery of endoperoxide-based hybrid compounds and prodrugs as multi-target/dual stage antimalarials, and the development of novel sulfur(VI)-based serine protease inhibitors and activity based probes. He has published over 170 papers and successfully supervised/co-supervised 27 PhD students. Rui was co-founder of the Medicinal Chemistry Division of the Portuguese Chemical Society, and he currently is the Past-President of the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC).
