Rui Moreira is a medicinal chemist by training, with a Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Industrial Pharmacy (1986) and a PhD degree in Pharmacy/Medicinal Chemistry (1991) from the University of Lisbon. After completing the compulsory military service in 1992, he visited the Department of Chemistry at The Open University UK, as a postdoctoral researcher. He joined the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Lisbon (FFUL) in 1992 as an assistant professor and went up the ranks to be a Full Professor in 2006. From 2010 to 2013, Rui Moreira was the coordinator of the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa), and since 2022 he is the president of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicines at FFUL, overseeing the activities of ca. 100 professors, lecturers, researchers, and technicians. He is a co-founder and board member of PT-OPENSCREEN, a national infrastructure for chemical biology and genetics, which recently joined the ERIC EU-OPENSCREEN (EU-OS). Rui Moreira is the leader of iMed.ULisboa’s Medicinal Chemistry Partner Site at EU-OS since 2022. He was the President the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC) from 2021 to 2023, being currently its Past President. Rui Moreira leads the medicinal chemistry research group at iMed.ULisboa, which comprises 3 associate researchers, 2 postdocs, and 10 PhD students, and 4 MSc students. He published 180 papers, including in high impact journals such as J Amer Chem Soc, Angew Chem, Proc Natl Acad Sci and J Med Chem, and has delivered more than 60 talks. He successfully (co)supervised >50 PhD/MSc students and postdocs and has been funded through competitive projects and grants from national and EU programs.
