Rui Lopes is a lecturer at the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology of Birkbeck, University of London, and a researcher at the Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC, NOVA-FCSH). He works on contemporary history, particularly on Cold War culture, transnational anticolonialism, and the international dimension of the Portuguese dictatorship and empire. He has a PhD in International History from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the same institution (both completed in 2012). He was the Principal Investigator for the FCT-funded R&D team project 'Amilcar Cabral, from Political History to the Politics of Memory' and, under the FCT Investigator programme, has also developed the individual project 'The Portuguese dictatorship and colonialism in western audiovisual fiction, 1933-1974'. He has published 1 peer-reviewed monograph, 2 peer-reviewed book chapters, and 8 peer-reviewed articles (6 in SCOPUS/Web of Science journals, three of them ranked Q1), with 1 more accepted for publication. He has co-edited a peer-reviewed special dossier for a Q1 journal. He was Graduate Teaching Assistant and Teaching Fellow at LSE, Visiting Tutor and Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, and has taught individual classes at Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA-FCSH). He was managing editor for the SCOPUS journal Cold War History and he is currently in the editorial boards of the multilingual, peer-reviewed, open access journals Práticas da História: Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past (which he co-founded) and Aniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image (where he is the editor of the 'Essays' section). He is also a member of the research networks CCW- Cultures of the Cold War, AIM- Portuguese Association of Moving Image Researchers, and Aleph- network of critical research of colonial images. At IHC, he headed the research group Culture, Identities & Power and now heads the research line Modern Mediations: Arts, Technology & Communication along with co-organising the regular seminar History & Image Workshop.
