Choreographer, researcher, educator, and performer working at the intersection of artistic practice and academic research in the field of performing arts. Her work is grounded in practice-as-research methodologies, with a particular focus on contemporary dance, dance dramaturgy, somatic practices, and performance studies. She holds a PhD in Performing Arts from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, including a doctoral research period at Université Paris 8 under the supervision of Isabelle Launay, funded by CAPES. She also holds a Master’s degree in Performing Arts from the Universidade de São Paulo, initial training from the Royal Academy of Dance, and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the Universidade Católica Dom Bosco. Her postdoctoral research at the Universidade de São Paulo and the Universidade de Lisboa led to the development of the concept of Choreographic Haikus. This compositional and analytical approach explores temporality, perception, and minimal structures in choreography. She is currently a researcher at the Centro de Estudos de Teatro and a collaborator with Forum Dança. In 2023, she was a Visiting Professor at the Universidade Federal da Bahia. She is the author of The Poetics of Nowhere: Towards Theatricality in Dance (2013) and Cia Carne Agonizante – Sem tempo para ter medo (2018), and co-convened the “Choreography and Corporeality” Working Group at the International Federation for Theatre Research, contributing to international debates on choreography and embodiment. Her artistic practice unfolds as a form of knowledge production. She has collaborated with dance companies and independent artists in Brazil and Portugal, including Ginga Cia de Dança (Campo Grande), Dançaurbana (MS), Cia Fragmento (São Paulo), Performa Teatro (São Paulo) Teatro Aberto (Lisboa), and the choreographer Luísa Saraiva (Berlin/Porto). In education, she founded and directed the Escola de Dança GD for over two decades, developing pedagogical frameworks that integrate artistic creation, somatic awareness, and critical thinking. She also led long-term projects in socially engaged contexts through Casa de Ensaio, working with children and youth from underserved communities. Alongside her academic and artistic work, she maintains a sustained engagement with somatic practices, holding certifications in Pilates, Gyrokinesis®, and the Klein Technique™. She is a member of international associations such as the Dance Studies Association, International Federation for Theatre Research, and EASTAP.

2022/01/04 - Current "Do Corpo ao Corpo" consists of regular classes based on the practice that Gisela Dória has been developing over many years of pedagogical and artistic experience. The proposed work engages in a dialogue with a variety of techniques, including Dance, Pilates, Gyrokinesis®, and several Somatic Education practices, such as the Klein Technique™. Rather than being a synthesis of these techniques, the classes promote the integration of different approaches in favor of a sensitivity that takes the uniquenes (Outros)

2025/10/13 - 2025/10/13 Práticas Somáticas: epistemologias críticas e decoloniais do corpo. This class offers an introduction to the foundations of somatic practices based on the formulations of Thomas Hanna and Martha Eddy, bringing together their historical, philosophical, and educational dimensions. It begins with an understanding of the soma as the body lived from within—conscious and processual experience—to examine the main schools and generations of somatic education. Master (Postgraduate Certificate) Universidade Federal de São Paulo - Campus Guarulhos, Brazil

2022/02/06 - 2022/11/20 “Klein Technique™ is an ongoing process of discovery. It requires a constant articulation of theoretical information and experiential practice. Like nature, it is ordered and infinite in its discovery. The goal of Klein Technique™ is education at a deep level of understanding the total use of the body to maximize each individual’s unique movement potential. It is a technique that honors the individual. It aims to teach movement from the individual perspective of internal knowledge and understanding. Students at all levels of Klein Technique™ (Outros)
2022/10/11 - 2022/10/26 As part of the research period, I led classes addressing both the history of classical ballet and the trajectory of Trisha Brown in relation to the Judson Dance Theater. These classes examined classical ballet as a historical and aesthetic foundation of Western theatrical dance, while also critically addressing its conventions, techniques, and dramaturgical structures. In parallel, the sessions on Trisha Brown and the Judson Dance Theater traced the emergence of postmodern dance in the 1960s, focusing on experimentation and everyday movement. Estudos Artísticos, variante de Artes do Espectáculo (Licenciatura) Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, Portugal
2021/11/11 - 2021/11/11 I led a class examining the convergence of dance and performance practices in the 1970s, with particular attention to the aesthetics of negation associated with the Judson Dance Theater and the critical reconfiguration of the body–space relationship in Trisha Brown’s early works. The session combined theoretical contextualization with video analysis and collective discussion, and included a practical exploration based on Leaning Duets (1970) by Trisha Brown. Estudos Artísticos, variante de Artes do Espectáculo (Licenciatura) Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, Portugal
