Helena Aidos has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics of Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa, since October 2020, where she teaches courses on Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Machine Learning. She is also a senior researcher at LASIGE and a member of the Data and Systems Intelligence and the Health and Biomedical Informatics Research Lines of Excellence. She received the MSc in Mathematics in 2007 from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, Portugal, and the Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2014 from IST, specializing in pattern recognition. She was a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Mathematics of IST, from February 2005 to February 2007, while being an MSc student at IST and at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of IST, from February 2011 to February 2015, while being a Ph.D. student at IST. From April 2015 to February 2018 she was a post-doctoral researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações with an FCT scholarship, where she was first placed in the FCT call in the field of Computer and Information Science. From September 2018 to October 2020 she was an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics of Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa. She participated and participates in several national research projects in bioinformatics and data science topics and is currently participating in the H2020 Project BRAINTEASER - BRinging Artificial INTelligencE home for a better cAre of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple SclERosis (Grant agreement ID: 101017598). She has a strong background in mathematics and statistics, particularly focused on pattern recognition and data analysis. Her current research interests focus on machine learning techniques (including deep learning) and their application to medical contexts. Her research activities include fundamental research on supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms (such as clustering, clustering ensembles, and dimensionality reduction techniques), similarity measures and time-series analysis, techniques for processing biomedical data, and diagnosis and prognosis of diseases (e.g., neurodegenerative diseases).
