Rafaela Lacerda is an auxiliary researcher at the Department of Human Genetics in Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge. She earned her PhD degree in Biology - Molecular Genetics in 2016 from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, studying the non-canonical mechanism of translation initiation of proteins with potential relevance in colorectal cancer and has been working in alternative translation mechanisms ever since, in proteins such as p53, UPF1, AGO1 and mTOR. She authored and co-authored several published journal articles. She attended and presented her work either oral communications or posters, at several scientific meetings in Portugal and abroad. She was awarded the best oral presentation in basic research in 2014, at the 19th annual meeting of the Portuguese Society for Human Genetics.
