David Pires earned a B.Sc. in Biology-Geology from the University of Minho in 2014 and a M.Sc. in Ecology from the same university in 2016, specializing in Plant Nematology. He later completed the first year of the Doctoral Program in Molecular and Environmental Biology in 2018, also at the University of Minho. He is currently a PhD student at the NemaLab/MED (Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development), University of Évora, and Research Fellow at the Nematology Laboratory of the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinarian Research (INIAV). He has 3 years of experience in multidisciplinary R&D projects, having integrated the scientific team of 4 national projects, and acting as unfunded collaborator in two other national projects. He was member of the organizing committee of 2 webinars, and volunteer at the 32nd Symposium of the European Society of Nematologists. He has acquired broad knowledge and skills in many disciplines, particularly in Nematology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. His current research interests focus on the ecology, biological control and sustainable management of plant-parasitic nematodes in agroecological and agroforestry systems. He's the author/co-author of: 3 peer-reviewed papers (one indexed in Web of Science); 2 conference proceedings; 3 oral communications (presented 2, one as invited speaker); and 12 poster communications (presented 6, three of which at international conferences). During the coronavirus pandemic, he co-founded the online working group Active Plant Nematologists, which aims to foster communication and cooperation between nematologists worldwide, actively participating in monthly meetings and the organization of virtual seminars, allowing him to build a global network. Furthermore, he was invited by the Governing Board of the European Society of Nematologists to assist the society's social media program and co-manage its Twitter account.
