David Pires received his BSc in Biology-Geology from the University of Minho in 2014 and his MSc in Ecology from the same university in 2016, specializing in Plant Nematology. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Évora, developing his project at the Nematology laboratory of the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research (INIAV, I.P.). He has over 5 years of experience in multidisciplinary R&D projects, including 3 months in an international context, having integrated the scientific team of several national projects. His current research interests focus on the ecology, biological control and multitrophic interactions for plant-parasitic nematode management in agroforestry systems. He has reviewed for 8 journals: AIMS Microbiology, Biocontrol Science & Technology, Cells, Forests, Heliyon, Microorganisms, Plant Disease and PLoS ONE. He was member of the organizing committee of 2 webinars, and volunteer at the 32nd Symposium of the European Society of Nematologists. He's the author/co-author of: 5 peer-reviewed papers; 2 conference proceedings; 1 magazine article; 14 talks (presented 9, three as invited speaker); and 17 posters (presented 8). He is supervising a BSc student and co-supervised another, and tutored 3 MSc students, including a Senior Lab Technician and a MSc Research Fellow, providing training in Nematology. He was awarded Best Poster presentation at an international conference. He was invited by the Governing Board of the European Society of Nematologists to co-manage its Twitter account. He was elected Student Representative on the Course Committee of the doctoral program in Biology at the University of Évora. During the coronavirus pandemic, he co-founded the online working group Active Plant Nematologists, which aims to foster communication and cooperation between nematologists worldwide, actively participating in monthly meetings and the organization of virtual seminars, allowing him to build a global network.
